A Visual Analytics Approach to Scheduling Customized Shuttle Buses via Perceiving Passengers' Travel Demands

Shuttle buses have been a popular means to move commuters sharing similar origins and destinations during periods of high travel demand. However, planning and deploying reasonable, customized service bus systems becomes challenging when the commute demand is rather dynamic. It is difficult, if not impossible to form a reliable, unbiased estimation of user needs in such a case using traditional modeling methods. We propose a visual analytics approach to facilitating assessment of actual, varying travel demands and planning of night customized shuttle systems. A preliminary case study verifies the efficacy of our approach.

A Visual Analytics Framework for Explaining and Diagnosing Transfer Learning Processes

Many statistical learning models hold an assumption that the training data and the future unlabeled data are drawn from the same distribution. However, this assumption is difficult to fulfill in real-world scenarios and creates barriers in reusing existing labels from similar application domains. Transfer Learning is intended to relax this assumption by modeling relationships between domains, and is often applied in deep learning applications to reduce the demand for labeled data and training time. Despite recent advances in exploring deep learning models with visual analytics tools, little work has explored the issue of explaining and diagnosing the knowledge transfer process between deep learning models. In this paper, we present a visual analytics framework for the multi-level exploration of the transfer learning processes when training deep neural networks. Our framework establishes a multi-aspect design to explain how the learned knowledge from the existing model is transferred into the new learning task when training deep neural networks. Based on a comprehensive requirement and task analysis, we employ descriptive visualization with performance measures and detailed inspections of model behaviors from the statistical, instance, feature, and model structure levels. We demonstrate our framework through two case studies on image classification by fine-tuning AlexNets to illustrate how analysts can utilize our framework.

A Visual Analytics Framework for Reviewing Multivariate Time-Series Data with Dimensionality Reduction

Data-driven problem solving in many real-world applications involves analysis of time-dependent multivariate data, for which dimensionality reduction (DR) methods are often used to uncover the intrinsic structure and features of the data. However, DR is usually applied to a subset of data that is either single-time-point multivariate or univariate time-series, resulting in the need to manually examine and correlate the DR results out of different data subsets. When the number of dimensions is large either in terms of the number of time points or attributes, this manual task becomes too tedious and infeasible. In this paper, we present MulTiDR, a new DR framework that enables processing of time-dependent multivariate data as a whole to provide a comprehensive overview of the data. With the framework, we employ DR in two steps. When treating the instances, time points, and attributes of the data as a 3D array, the first DR step reduces the three axes of the array to two, and the second DR step visualizes the data in a lower-dimensional space. In addition, by coupling with a contrastive learning method and interactive visualizations, our framework enhances analysts' ability to interpret DR results. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework with four case studies using real-world datasets.

A Visualization Interface to Improve the Transparency of Collected Personal Data on the Internet

Online services are used for all kinds of activities, like news, entertainment, publishing content or connecting with others. But information technology enables new threats to privacy by means of global mass surveillance, vast databases and fast distribution networks. Current news are full of misuses and data leakages. In most cases, users are powerless in such situations and develop an attitude of neglect for their online behaviour. On the other hand, the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) gives users the right to request a copy of all their personal data stored by a particular service, but the received data is hard to understand or analyze by the common internet user. This paper presents TransparencyVis - a web-based interface to support the visual and interactive exploration of data exports from different online services. With this approach, we aim at increasing the awareness of personal data stored by such online services and the effects of online behaviour. This design study provides an online accessible prototype and a best practice to unify data exports from different sources.

A Work-Centered Approach for Cyber-Physical-Social System Design: Applications in Aerospace Industrial Inspection

Industrial inspection automation in aerospace presents numerous challenges due to the dynamic, information-rich and regulated aspects of the domain. To diagnose the condition of an aircraft component, expert inspectors rely on a significant amount of procedural and tacit knowledge (know-how). As systems capabilities do not match high level human cognitive functions, the role of humans in future automated work systems will remain important. A Cyber-Physical-Social System (CPSS) is a suitable solution that envisions humans and agents in a joint activity to enhance cognitive/computational capabilities and produce better outcomes. This paper investigates how a work-centred approach can support and guide the engineering process of a CPSS with an industrial use case. We present a robust methodology that combines fieldwork inquiries and model-based engineering to elicit and formalize rich mental models into exploitable design patterns. Our results exhibit how inspectors process and apply knowledge to diagnose the component`s condition, how they deal with the institution`s rules and operational constraints (norms, safety policies, standard operating procedures). We suggest how these patterns can be incorporated in software modules or can conceptualize Human-Agent Teaming requirements. We argue that this framework can corroborate the right fit between a system`s technical and ecological validity (system fit with operating context) that enhances data reliability, productivity-related factors and system acceptance by end-users.

A co-Design approach to develop a smart cooking appliance. Applying a Domain Specific Language for a community supported appliance

Our environment, whether at work, in public spaces, or at home, is becoming more connected, and increasingly responsive. Meal preparation even when it involves simply heating ready-made food can be perceived as a complex process for people with disabilities. This research aimed to prototype, using a co-Design approach a Community Supported Appliance (CSA) by developing a Domain Specific Language (DSL), precisely created for a semi-automated cooking process. The DSL was shaped and expressed in the idiom of the users and allowed the CSA to support independence for users while performing daily cooking activities.

A large, crowdsourced evaluation of gesture generation systems on common data: The GENEA Challenge 2020

Co-speech gestures, gestures that accompany speech, play an important role in human communication. Automatic co-speech gesture generation is thus a key enabling technology for embodied conversational agents (ECAs), since humans expect ECAs to be capable of multi-modal communication. Research into gesture generation is rapidly gravitating towards data-driven methods. Unfortunately, individual research efforts in the field are difficult to compare: there are no established benchmarks, and each study tends to use its own dataset, motion visualisation, and evaluation methodology. To address this situation, we launched the GENEA Challenge, a gesture-generation challenge wherein participating teams built automatic gesture-generation systems on a common dataset, and the resulting systems were evaluated in parallel in a large, crowdsourced user study using the same motion-rendering pipeline. Since differences in evaluation outcomes between systems now are solely attributable to differences between the motion-generation methods, this enables benchmarking recent approaches against one another in order to get a better impression of the state of the art in the field. This paper reports on the purpose, design, results, and implications of our challenge.

A privacy-preserving approach to streaming eye-tracking data

Eye-tracking technology is being increasingly integrated into mixed reality devices. Although critical applications are being enabled, there are significant possibilities for violating user privacy expectations. We show that there is an appreciable risk of unique user identification even under natural viewing conditions in virtual reality. This identification would allow an app to connect a user's personal ID with their work ID without needing their consent, for example. To mitigate such risks we propose a framework that incorporates gatekeeping via the design of the application programming interface and via software-implemented privacy mechanisms. Our results indicate that these mechanisms can reduce the rate of identification from as much as 85% to as low as 30%. The impact of introducing these mechanisms is less than 1.5 ??error in gaze position for gaze prediction. Gaze data streams can thus be made private while still allowing for gaze prediction, for example, during foveated rendering. Our approach is the first to support privacy-by-design in the flow of eye-tracking data within mixed reality use cases.

A report on the first virtual PLDI conference

This is a report on the PLDI 2020 conference, for which I was General Chair, which was held virtually for the first time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report contains: my personal reflections on the positive and negative aspects of the event; a description of the format of the event and associated logistical details; and data (with some analysis) on attendees' views on the conference format, the extent to which attendees engaged with the conference, attendees' views on virtual vs. physical conferences (with a focus on PLDI specifically) and the diversity of conference registrants. I hope that the report will be a useful resource for organizers of upcoming virtual conferences, and generally interesting to the Programming Languages community and beyond.

A survey on applications of augmented, mixed and virtual reality for nature and environment

Augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) are technologies of great potential due to the engaging and enriching experiences they are capable of providing. Their use is rapidly increasing in diverse fields such as medicine, manufacturing or entertainment. However, the possibilities that AR, VR and MR offer in the area of environmental applications are not yet widely explored. In this paper we present the outcome of a survey meant to discover and classify existing AR/VR/MR applications that can benefit the environment or increase awareness on environmental issues. We performed an exhaustive search over several online publication access platforms and past proceedings of major conferences in the fields of AR/VR/MR. Identified relevant papers were filtered based on novelty, technical soundness, impact and topic relevance, and classified into different categories. Referring to the selected papers, we discuss how the applications of each category are contributing to environmental protection, preservation and sensitization purposes. We further analyse these approaches as well as possible future directions in the scope of existing and upcoming AR/VR/MR enabling technologies.
