An Efficient Transition Algorithm For Seamless Drone Multicasting

Many drone-related applications (e.g., drone-aided video capture, drone traffic and safety management) require group communications between drones to efficiently disseminate data or reliably deliver critical information, making use of the line-of-sight coverage of drones to realise services that ground devices may not be capable of. This paper studies highperformance yet resource-efficient mobile drone multicasting via trajectory adjustment. We first analyse the trajectory adjustment condition to determine whether a straight-line trajectory is fully covered by the multicast or not, by conducting simple computation tasks and with controlled overhead traffic. We then propose the trajectory adjustment scheme to provide a new trajectory with controlled travel distances. The ETTA algorithm is finally presented to apply the trajectory adjustment condition and scheme to a drone transiting between forwarders whose coverage do not overlap. The algorithm relies on multicasting forwarders, instead of additional transition forwarders, to fully cover the adjusted trajectory, helping to control interference and network traffic load. Our NS2 simulation results demonstrate that ETTA, as compared to other mobile multicasts, can achieve guaranteed performance for drone receivers in a multicast with heavier traffic loads.

An Evaluation Framework of End-to-End 5G Millimeter Wave Communication for Connected Vehicle Applications

The internet-of-things (IoT) environment connects different intelligent devices together and enables seamless data communication between the connected devices. Connected vehicles (CVs) are one of the primary example of the IoT, and the efficient, reliable, and safe operation of CVs demands a reliable wireless communication system, which can ensure high throughput and low communication latency. The 5G millimeter wave (5G mmWave) wireless communication network offers such benefits, which can be the enabler of CV applications, especially for dense urban areas with high number of CVs. In this study, we present a simulation-based evaluation framework of end-to-end 5G mmWave communication for CV applications. In addition, we compare the 5G mmWave with the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology for a CV application. The simulation framework is developed using two simulators, a network simulator and a traffic simulator. In order to develop the framework in this study, we have used Network Simulator 3 (ns-3) and SUMO, an open-source microscopic roadway traffic simulator. We have used end-to-end latency, packet loss and throughput as the performance evaluation metrics. We have found that for dense urban areas, 5G mmWave can achieve higher throughput, lower latency and lower data loss compared to DSRC. 5G mmWave can support CV applications with high throughput requirement on the downlink data flow. Through further investigation, we have found that the performance of 5G mmWave is significantly impacted by the penetration level of CVs, maximum CV speed, and CV application requirements.

An Exhaustive Survey on P4 Programmable Data Plane Switches: Taxonomy, Applications, Challenges, and Future Trends

Traditionally, the data plane has been designed with fixed functions to forward packets using a small set of protocols. This closed-design paradigm has limited the capability of the switches to proprietary implementations which are hardcoded by vendors, inducing a lengthy, costly, and inflexible process. Recently, data plane programmability has attracted significant attention from both the research community and the industry, permitting operators and programmers in general to run customized packet processing function. This open-design paradigm is paving the way for an unprecedented wave of innovation and experimentation by reducing the time of designing, testing, and adopting new protocols; enabling a customized, top-down approach to develop network applications; providing granular visibility of packet events defined by the programmer; reducing complexity and enhancing resource utilization of the programmable switches; and drastically improving the performance of applications that are offloaded to the data plane. Despite the impressive advantages of programmable data plane switches and their importance in modern networks, the literature has been missing a comprehensive survey. To this end, this paper provides a background encompassing an overview of the evolution of networks from legacy to programmable, describing the essentials of programmable switches, and summarizing their advantages over Software-defined Networking (SDN) and legacy devices. The paper then presents a unique, comprehensive taxonomy of applications developed with P4 language; surveying, classifying, and analyzing more than 150 articles; discussing challenges and considerations; and presenting future perspectives and open research issues.

An Experimental mmWave Channel Model for UAV-to-UAV Communications

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks can provide a resilient communication infrastructure to enhance terrestrial networks in case of traffic spikes or disaster scenarios. However, to be able to do so, they need to be based on high-bandwidth wireless technologies for both radio access and backhaul. With this respect, the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum represents an enticing solution, since it provides large chunks of untapped spectrum that can enable ultra-high data-rates for aerial platforms. Aerial mmWave channels, however, experience characteristics that are significantly different from terrestrial deployments in the same frequency bands. As of today, mmWave aerial channels have not been extensively studied and modeled. Specifically, the combination of UAV micro-mobility (because of imprecisions in the control loop, and external factors including wind) and the highly directional mmWave transmissions require ad hoc models to accurately capture the performance of UAV deployments. To fill this gap, we propose an empirical propagation loss model for UAV-to-UAV communications at 60 GHz, based on an extensive aerial measurement campaign conducted with the Facebook Terragraph channel sounders. We compare it with 3GPP channel models and make the measurement dataset publicly available.

An Intelligent Prediction System for Mobile Source Localization Using Time Delay Measurements

In this paper, we introduce an intelligent prediction system for mobile source localization in industrial Internet of things. The position and velocity of mobile source are jointly predicted by using Time Delay (TD) measurements in the intelligent system. To predict the position and velocity, the Relaxed Semi-Definite Programming (RSDP) algorithm is firstly designed by dropping the rank-one constraint. However, dropping the rank-one constraint leads to produce a suboptimal solution. To improve the performance, we further put forward a Penalty Function Semi-Definite Programming (PF-SDP) method to obtain the rank-one solution of the optimization problem by introducing the penalty terms. Then an Adaptive Penalty Function Semi-Definite Programming (APF-SDP) algorithm is also proposed to avoid the excessive penalty by adaptively choosing the penalty coefficient. We conduct experiments in both a simulation environment and a real system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results have demonstrated that the proposed intelligent APF-SDP algorithm outperforms the PF-SDP in terms of the position and velocity estimation whether the noise level is large or not.

An Intelligent QoS Algorithm for Home Networks

A novel quality of service (QoS) management algorithm for home networks is presented in this letter. The algorithm is based on service prediction for intelligent QoS management. The service prediction is carried out by a general regression neural network with a profile containing the past records of the service. A novel profile updating technique is proposed so that the profile size can remain small for fast bandwidth allocation. The analytical study and experiments over real LAN reveal that the proposed algorithm provides reliable QoS management for home networks with low computational overhead.

An Optimal Load Balanced Resource Allocation Scheme for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks based on Big Data Technology

An important issue in heterogeneous wireless networks is how to optimally utilize various radio resources. While many methods have been proposed for managing radio resources in each network, these methods are not suitable for heterogeneous wireless networks. In this study, a new management method is proposed which provides acceptable service quality and roaming rate, reduces the cost of the service, and utilizes big data technology for its operation. In our proposed scheme, by considering various parameters such as the type of the service, the information related to the location of the user, the movement direction of the user, the cost of the service, and a number of other statistical measures, the most suitable technology for radio access will be selected. It is expected that besides improving the decision making accuracy in selecting the radio access technology and the balanced distribution of network resources, the proposed method provides lower roaming and lower probability of stopping roaming requests entering the network. By considering the various service classes and various quality of service requirements regarding delay, vibration and so on, this can be useful in optimal implementation of heterogeneous wireless networks.

An SDN-IoT-based Framework for Future Smart Cities: Addressing Perspective

In this Chapter, a software-defined network (SDN)-based framework for future smart cities has been proposed and discussed. It also comprises a distributed addressing scheme to facilitate the allocation of addresses to devices in the smart city dynamically. The framework is dynamic and modules can be added and omitted by a centralized controlling unit without disturbing the other components of the framework and other modules may be updated accordingly. In the proposed addressing scheme, a new Internet of Things (IoT) device will receive an IP address from one of their existing neighboring peer devices. This allows devices in the city to act as a proxy and generate a set of unique IP addresses from their own IP addresses, which can then be assigned to new (joining) devices; hence, reducing addressing overhead and latency, as well as avoiding the need to send broadcast messages during the address allocation process. Thus, it achieves considerable bandwidth and energy savings for the IoT devices.

An efficient linear programming rounding-and-refinement algorithm for large-scale network slicing problem

In this paper, we consider the network slicing problem which attempts to map multiple customized virtual network requests (also called services) to a common shared network infrastructure and allocate network resources to meet diverse service requirements, and propose an efficient two-stage algorithm for solving this NP-hard problem. In the first stage, the proposed algorithm uses an iterative linear programming (LP) rounding procedure to place the virtual network functions of all services into cloud nodes while taking traffic routing of all services into consideration; in the second stage, the proposed algorithm uses an iterative LP refinement procedure to obtain a solution for traffic routing of all services with their end-to-end delay constraints being satisfied. Compared with the existing algorithms which either have an exponential complexity or return a low-quality solution, our proposed algorithm achieves a better trade-off between solution quality and computational complexity. In particular, the worst-case complexity of our proposed algorithm is polynomial, which makes it suitable for solving large-scale problems. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm.

An experimental evaluation and characterization of VoIP over an LTE-A network

Mobile telecommunications are converging towards all-IP solutions. This is the case of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology that, having no circuit-switched bearer to support voice traffic, needs a dedicated VoIP infrastructure, which often relies on the IP Multimedia Subsystem architecture. Most telecom operators implement LTE-A, an advanced version of LTE often marketed as 4G+, which achieves data rate peaks of 300 Mbps. Yet, although such novel technology boosts the access to advanced multimedia contents and services, telco operators continue to consider the VoIP market as the major revenue for their business. In this work, the authors propose a detailed performance assessment of VoIP traffic by carrying out experimental trials across a real LTE-A environment. The experimental campaign consists of two stages. First, we characterize VoIP calls between fixed and mobile terminals, based on a dataset that includes more than 750,000 data-voice packets. We analyze quality-of-service metrics such as round-trip time (RTT) and jitter, to capture the influence of uncontrolled factors that typically appear in real-world settings. In the second stage, we further consider VoIP flows across a range of codecs, looking at the trade-offs between quality and bandwidth consumption. Moreover, we propose a statistical characterization of jitter and RTT (representing the most critical parameters), identifying the optimal approximating distribution, namely the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV). The estimation of parameters through the Maximum Likelihood criterion, leads us to reveal both the short- and long-tail behaviour for jitter and RTT, respectively.
