Theoretical Physics Department, Institute of Physics,Budapest University of Technology and Economics, H-1521 Budapest, Hungary (Dated: November 3, 2018)Dynamical correlations of various local operators are studied in the spin-half two-channel Kondo(2CK) model in the presence of channel anisotropy or external magnetic field. A conformal fieldtheory-based scaling approach is used to predict the analytic properties of various spectral functionsin the vicinity of the two-channel Kondo fixed point. These analytical results compare well withhighly accurate density matrix numerical renormalization group results. The universal cross-overfunctions interpolating between channel-anisotropy or magnetic field-induced Fermi liquid regimesand the two-channel Kondo, non-Fermi liquid regimes are determined numerically. The boundariesof the real 2CK scaling regime are found to be rather restricted, and to depend both on the typeof the perturbation and on the specific operator whose correlation function is studied. In a smallmagnetic field, a universal resonance is observed in the local fermion’s spectral function. Thedominant superconducting instability appears in the composite superconducting channel.

I. INTRODUCTION
Deviations from Fermi liquid-like behavior observede.g. in the metallic state of high-temperature cupratesuperconductors, or in heavy fermion systems prompted physicists to look for new non-Fermi liquid(NFL) compounds. So far a large number of such ex-otic compounds has been found and investigated. Inthese systems electrons remain incoherent down to verylow temperatures and the usual Fermi liquid descrip-tion breaks down. To our current understanding, NFLphysics may arise in many different ways: it can occurdue to some local dynamical quantum fluctuations oftendescribed by quantum impurity models, it can alsobe attributed to the presence of the quantum fluctua-tions of an order parameter or some collective modes,as is the case in the vicinity of many quantum phasetransitions, or for the prototypical example of a Lut-tinger liquid, where electrons are totally dis-integrated into collective excitations of the electron gas.NFL physics can also appear as a consequence of disorderlike e.g. in disordered Kondo alloys.
In this paper we study a variant of the overscreenedmulti-channel Kondo model: the spin- , two-channelKondo (2CK) model, which is the simplest prototypi-cal example of non-Fermi liquid quantum impurity mod-els. This model has first been introduced by Nozi`eresand Blandin, and since has been proposed to de-scribe a variety of systems including dilute heavy fermioncompounds, tunneling impurities in disordered metalsand doped semiconductors. More recently, the2CK state has been observed in a very controlled wayin a double dot system originally proposed by Oreg andGoldhaber-Gordon.
The two-channel Kondo model consists of a spin- ,local moment which is coupled through antiferromag-netic exchange interactions to two channels of conduc-tion electrons. Electrons in both channels try to screen the impurity spin. If the coupling of the spin to one ofthe channels is stronger than to the other then electronsin the more strongly coupled channel screen the spin, while the other channel becomes decoupled. However, for equal exchange couplings, the competition betweenthe two channels leads to overscreening and results in anon-Fermi liquid behavior: Among others, it is character-ized by a non-trivial zero temperature residual entropy,a square root-like temperature dependence of the differ-ential conductance, a logarithmic divergence of the spinsusceptibility and the linear specific heat coefficient atlow temperatures. This unusual and fragile ground statecannot be described within the framework of Nozi`eres’Fermi liquid theory. Being a prototypical example of non-Fermi liquidmodels, the two-channel Kondo model (2CKM) has al-ready been investigated with a number of methods. These include non-perturbative techniques like the BetheAnsatz, which gives full account of the thermodynamicproperties, boundary conformal field theory, whichdescribes the vicinity of the fixed points, and numeri-cal renormalization group (NRG) methods. Further-more other less powerful approximate methods such asthe Yuval-Anderson approach, Abelian bosonization, large- f expansion, and non-crossing approximation have also been used to study the 2CKM successfully.Rather surprisingly, despite this extensive work, verylittle is known about dynamical correlation functions suchas the spin susceptibility, local charge and superconduct-ing susceptibilities. Even the detailed properties of the T -matrix, essential to understand elastic and inelasticscattering in this non-Fermi liquid case, have only beencomputed earlier using conformal field theory (which israther limited in energy range) and by the non-crossingapproximation (which is not well-controlled and is un-able to describe the Fermi liquid cross-over). It wasalso possible to compute some of the dynamical corre-lation functions in case of extreme spin anisotropy us-ing Abelian bosonization results, though these calcu-lations reproduce only partly the generic features of thespin-isotropic model. Local correlations in the Ander-son model around the non-Fermi liquid fixed point havealready been investigated with the use of NRG, althoughin the absence of channel anisotropy and magnetic field. However, a thorough and careful NRG analysis of the T = 0 temperature T -matrix of the 2CKM has been car-ried out only very recently, and the T = 0 analysisstill needs to be done. The main purpose of this paper is to fill this gap bygiving a comprehensive analysis of the local correlationfunctions at zero temperature using the numerical renor-malization group approach. However, in the vicinity ofthe rather delicate two-channel Kondo fixed point, theconventional NRG method fails and its further developedversion, the density matrix NRG (DM-NRG) needs tobe applied. Furthermore, a rather large number of mul-tiplets must be kept to achieve good accuracy. We havetherefore implemented a modified version of the recentlydeveloped spectral sum conserving DM-NRG method, where we use non-Abelian symmetries in a flexible wayto compute the real and the imaginary parts of variouslocal correlation functions. To identify the relevant perturbations around the NFLfixed point we apply the machinery of boundary confor-mal field theory. Then we systematically study how thevicinity of fixed points and the introduction of relevantperturbations such as a finite channel anisotropy or a fi-nite magnetic field influence the form of the dynamicalresponse functions at zero temperature. We mainly fo-cus on the strong coupling regime of the 2CK model andthe universal cross-over functions in the proximity of thisregion induced by an external magnetic field or channelanisotropy. We remark that these cross-over functions, describing the cross-over from the non-Fermi liquid fixedpoint to a Fermi liquid fixed point, as well as the re-sponse functions can currently be computed reliably atall energy scales only with NRG. However, we shall beable to use the results of boundary conformal field theory, more precisely, the knowledge of the operator content ofthe two-channel Kondo fixed point and the scaling di-mensions of the various perturbations around it, to makevery general statements on the analytic properties of thevarious cross-over and spectral functions. We shall devote special attention to superconductingfluctuations. It has been proposed that unusual super-conducting states observed in some incoherent heavyfermion compounds could also emerge as a result oflocal superconducting correlations associated with two-channel Kondo physics.
Here we investigate somepossible superconducting order parameters consistentwith the conformal field theoretical predictions, and findthat the dominant instability emerges in the so-called composite superconducting channel , as it was proposedby Coleman et al . The paper is organized as follows. In Section II start-ing from the one-dimensional, continuum formulation of the 2CKM we connect it to a dimensionless approxima-tion of it suited to our DM-NRG calculations. We alsoprovide the symmetry generators used in the conformalfield theoretical and DM-NRG calculations. In SectionIII we use boundary conformal field theory to classify theboundary highest-weight fields of the electron-hole sym-metrical 2CKM by their quantum numbers and identifythe relevant perturbations around the 2CK fixed point.Based on this classification the fields are then expandedin leading order in terms of the operators of the free the-ory. In Section IV we describe the technical details ofour DM-NRG calculations. In Sections V, VI and VII westudy the real and the imaginary parts of the retardedGreen’s functions of the local fermions, the impurity spinand the local superconducting order parameters. In eachof these sections we first discuss the analytic forms ofthe susceptibilities in the asymptotic regions of the two-channel and single channel Kondo scaling regimes, asthey follow from scaling arguments. Then we confirmour predictions by demonstrating how the expected cor-rections due to the relevant perturbations and the leadingirrelevant operator present themselves in the DM-NRGdata. Furthermore we determine the boundaries of the2CK scaling regimes and derive universal scaling curvesconnecting the FL and NFL fixed points for each oper-ator under study. Finally, our conclusions are drawn inSection VIII.
II. HAMILTONIAN AND SYMMETRIES
The two-channel Kondo model consists of an impuritywith a magnetic moment S = embedded into a Fermiliquid (FL) of two types of electrons (labeled by the flavoror channel indices α = 1 , H = X α,µ Z D F − D F d k k c † α,µ ( k ) c α,µ ( k ) (1)+ X α X µ,ν J α Z D F − D F d k Z D F − D F d k ′ ~S c † αµ ( k ) ~σ µν c αν ( k ′ ) . Here c † α,µ ( k ) creates an electron of flavor α in the l = 0angular momentum channel with spin µ and radial mo-mentum k measured from the Fermi momentum. In theHamiltonian above we allowed for a channel anisotropyof the couplings, J = J , and denoted the Pauli ma-trices by ~σ . In the first, kinetic term, we assumed aspherical Fermi surface and linearized the spectrum ofthe conduction electrons, ξ ( k ) ≈ v F k = k , but these as-sumptions are not crucial: Apart from irrelevant terms inthe Hamiltonian, our considerations below carry over toessentially any local density of states with electron-holesymmetry. The fields c † α,µ ( k ) are normalized to satisfythe anticommutation relations (cid:8) c † α,µ ( k ) , c β,ν ( k ′ ) (cid:9) = δ α,β δ µ,ν δ ( k − k ′ ) , (2)and therefore the couplings J α are just the dimensionlesscouplings, usually defined in the literature. Since we areinterested in the low-energy properties of the system, anenergy cut-off D F is introduced for the kinetic and theinteraction energies. In heavy fermion systems, this largeenergy scale is in the range of the Fermi energy, D F ∼ E F , while for quantum dots, it is of the order of the singleparticle level spacing of the dot, δǫ or its charging energy, E C , whichever is smaller.The Hamiltonian above possesses various symmetries.To see it, it is worth to introduce the left-moving fermionfields, ψ α,µ ( x ) ≡ Z D F − D F dk e − ikx c α,µ ( k ) , (3)and to rewrite the Hamiltonian as H = X α,µ Z d x π ψ † α,µ ( x ) i∂ x ψ α,µ ( x )+ X α J α ~Sψ † (0) ~σψ (0) . (4)Then the total spin operators J i defined as J i ≡ S i + Z d x π J i ( x ) , (5) J i ( x ) ≡ X α : ψ † α ( x ) σ i ψ α ( x ) : (6)commute with the Hamiltonian and satisfy the standardSU(2) algebra, (cid:2) J i , J j (cid:3) = iǫ ijk J k . (7)In the previous equations we suppressed spin indices andintroduced the normal ordering : ... : with respect to thenon-interacting Fermi sea. In a similar way we can definethe “charge spin” density operators, for the channels α =1 , C zα ( x ) ≡
12 : ψ † α ( x ) ψ α ( x ) : C − α ( x ) ≡ ψ α ↑ ( x ) ψ α ↓ ( x ) , C + α ( x ) ≡ ψ † α ↓ ( x ) ψ † α ↑ ( x ) ,C ± α ( x ) ≡ C xα ( x ) ± i C yα ( x ) , (8)and the corresponding symmetry generators C iα ≡ Z d x π C iα ( x ) ( i = x, y, z ) . (9)The generators C iα , which are related to the electron-holesymmetry, satisfy the same SU(2) algebra as the J i -s, h C iα , C jβ i = iδ αβ ǫ ijk C kβ , (10)and they also commute with the Hamiltonian, Eq. (4).Thus the Hamiltonian H has a symmetry SU C (2) × SU C (2) × SU S (2) in the charge and spin sectors for ar-bitrary couplings, J α .To perform NRG calculations, we use the following ap-proximation of the dimensionless Hamiltonian, H D F (1 + Λ − ) ≈ X α X µ,ν ˜ J α ~Sf † ,α,µ ~σ µν f ,α,µ + ∞ X n =0 X α,µ,ν t n ( f † n,α,µ f n +1 ,α,µ + h.c. ) , (11)with Λ a discretization parameter and ˜ J α = 4 J α / (1 +Λ − ). The operator, f creates an electron right at theimpurity site, and can be expressed as f ,α,µ = 1 √ D F Z D F − D F dk c α,µ ( k ) . (12)The Hamiltonian Eq. (11) is also called the Wilson chain:it describes electrons hopping along a semi-infinite chainwith a hopping amplitude t n ∼ Λ − n/ , and interactingwith the impurity only at site 0. In the NRG procedure,this Hamiltonian is diagonalized iteratively, and its spec-trum is used to compute the spectral functions of thevarious operators. We remark that the Wilson Hamiltonian is not iden-tical to H , since some terms are neglected along itsderivation. Nevertheless, similar to H , the WilsonHamiltonian also possesses the symmetry SU C (2) × SU C (2) × SU S (2) for arbitrary J and J couplings. The corresponding symmetry generators have been enu-merated in Table I. We can then use these symmetries tolabel every multiplet in the Hilbert space and every op-erator multiplet by the eigenvalues ~ J = j ( j + 1) and ~ C α = c α ( c α + 1). Throughout this paper, we shall usethese quantum numbers to classify states and operators.In the presence of a magnetic field, i.e., when a term H magn = − gµ B B S z (13)is added to H , the symmetry of the system breaks downto SU C (2) × SU C (2) × U S (1), with the symmetry U S (1)corresponding to the conservation of the z -component ofthe spin, J z (see Table I). In the rest of the papers weshall use units where we set gµ B ≡ III. THE NON-FERMI LIQUID FIXED POINTAND ITS OPERATOR CONTENT
For J = J = J and in the absence of an external mag-netic field, the Hamiltonian, H possesses a dynamicallygenerated energy scale, the so-called Kondo temperature, T K ≈ D F e − /J . The definition of T K is somewhat arbitrary. In this paper, T K shall be defined as the energy ω at which for J = J Symmetry group GeneratorsSU Cα (2) C + α = ∞ X n =0 ( − n f † n,α, ↑ f † n,α, ↓ , C zα = ∞ X n =0 X µ “ f † n,α,µ f n,α,µ − ” , C − α = C + † α SU S (2) ~ J = ~S + ∞ X n =0 X α,µ,ν f † n,α,µ ~σ µν f n,α,ν TABLE I: Generators of the used symmetries for the two-channel Kondo model computations. Sites along the Wilson chainare labeled by n whereas α and µ, ν are the channel and spin indices, respectively. the spectral function of the composite fermion drops tohalf of its value assumed at ω = 0 (for further detailssee the end of this Section and Fig. 1). For B = 0 and J = J , below this energy scale the physics is governedby the so-called two-channel Kondo fixed point.The physics of the two-channel Kondo fixed point andits vicinity can be captured using conformal field the-ory. The two-channel Kondo finite size spectrum and itsoperator content has first been obtained using boundaryconformal field theory by Affleck and Ludwig. However,instead of charge SU(2) symmetries, Affleck and Ludwigused flavor SU(2) and charge U(1) symmetries to obtainthe fixed point spectrum. The use of charge SU(2) sym-metries, however, has a clear advantage over the flavorsymmetry when it comes to performing NRG calcula-tions: While the channel anisotropy violates the flavorsymmetry, it does not violate the charge SU(2) symme-tries. Therefore, even in the channel anisotropic case, wehave three commuting SU(2) symmetries. If we switchon a local magnetic field, only the spin SU(2) symmetryis reduced to its U(1) subgroup. Using charge symme-tries allows thus for much more precise calculations, andin fact, using them is absolutely necessary to obtain sat-isfactorily accurate spectral functions, especially in thepresence of a magnetic field.To understand the fixed point spectrum and the oper-ator content of the 2CKM, let us outline the boundaryconformal field theory in this SU C (2) × SU C (2) × SU S (2)language. First, we remark that the spin density oper-ators, J i ( x ) satisfy the SU(2) k =2 Kac-Moody algebra oflevel k = 2, (cid:2) J i ( x ) , J j ( x ′ ) (cid:3) = k δ ij δ ′ ( x − x ′ )+ i π δ ( x − x ′ ) ǫ ijk J k ( x ) , (14)while the charge density operators, C iα ( x ) defined in theprevious section satisfy the Kac-Moody algebra of level k = 1: h C iα ( x ) , C jβ ( x ′ ) i = k δ ij δ αβ δ ′ ( x − x ′ )+ i π δ αβ δ ( x − x ′ ) ǫ ijk C kα ( x ) . We can use these current densities and the coset con- struction to write the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian as H = H C + H C + H S + H I , (15) H Cα = 13 Z d x π : ~C α ( x ) ~C α ( x ) : , H S = 14 Z d x π : ~J ( x ) ~J ( x ) : . In H , the first two terms describe the charge sectors, andhave central charge c = 1, while H S describes the spinsector, and has central charge c = 3 /
2. The last termcorresponds to the coset space, and must have centralcharge c = 1 /
2, since the free fermion model has centralcharge c = 4, corresponding to the four combinations ofspin and channel quantum numbers. This term can thusbe identified as the Ising model, having primary fields1l , σ, ǫ with scaling dimensions 0 , / , /
2, respectively. We can then carry out the conformal embedding in theusual way, by comparing the finite size spectrum of thefree Hamiltonian with that of Eq. (15), and identifyingthe allowed primary fields in the product space. Thethe fusion rules obtained this way are listed on the leftside of Table II. The finite size spectrum at the two-channel Kondo fixed point can be derived by fusing withthe impurity spin (which couples to the spin sector only),following the operator product expansion of the Wess–Zumino–Novikov–Witten model, 1 / ⊗ → /
2, 1 / ⊗ / → ⊕
1, 1 / ⊗ → / ~ J − ~φ s , is also included.Although it is not a primary field, close to the 2CKfixed point, this operator will also have impact on theform the correlation functions. What remains is to identify the scaling operators interms of the operators of the non-interacting theory. Ingeneral, an operator of the non-interacting theory canbe written as an infinite series in terms of the scalingoperators and their descendants. Apart from the Isingsector, which is hard to identify, we can tell by lookingat the various quantum numbers of an operator acting onthe Wilson chain, which primary fields could be presentin it. In this way, we can identify, e.g. ~φ s as the spinoperator ~S . Thus the spin operator can be expressed as ~S = A s ~φ s + . . . (16) c c j I E free σ

The weight, A s , can be deter-mined from matching the decay of the spin-spin corre-lation function at short and long times. This way we endup with A s ∼ / √ T K .We remark that there are infinitely many operatorsthat contain the scaling fields in their expansion. Asan example, consider the operators φ τσψ . Here the label σ = {↑ , ↓} refers to the spin components of a j = 1 / τ = ± refer to the charge spins of a charge c = 1 / f † , ,σ transformsas a spinor under spin rotations. It can easily be seen thatthe operator ˜ f † , ≡ iσ y f , also transforms as a spinor.We can then form a four-spinor out of these operators, γ ≡ { f † , ,σ , ˜ f † , ,σ } . It is easy to show that γ transformsas a spinor under SU C (2) rotations as well, thus φ τσψ could be identified as γ = { f † , ,σ , ˜ f † , ,σ } .However, we can construct another operator, F † ≡ f † , ~S~σ and its counterpart, ˜ F † ≡ iσ y F , and form a four-spinor out of them: Γ ≡ { F † ,σ , ˜ F † ,σ } . This operatorhas the same quantum numbers as γ , and in fact, bothoperators’ expansion contains φ τσψ .The operator φ ττ ′ ∆ is of special interest, since it is rel-evant at the two-channel Kondo fixed point, just likethe spin. Its susceptibility therefore diverges logarith-mically. Good candidates for these operators would be P σσ ′ ǫ σσ ′ γ τσ γ τ ′ σ ′ , since these are spin singlet operatorsthat behave as charge 1/2 spinors in both channels. The τ = τ ′ = + component of this operator corresponds tothe superconducting order parameter O SC ≡ f † , , ↑ f † , , ↓ − f † , , ↓ f † , , ↑ , (17)while the + − components describe simply a local opera-tor that hybridizes the channels, ∼ f † , ,σ f , ,σ . Another candidate would be the operator, P σσ ′ ǫ σσ ′ Γ τσ γ τ ′ σ ′ . This operator is also a localsinglet, and has charge spins c = c = 1 /
2. Itcontains the following component of the compositesuperconducting order parameter O SCC ≡ f † , ~S~σ iσ y f † , . (18)From their transformation properties it is not obvious, which one of the above superconducting order parame-ters gives the leading singularity. However, NRG givesa very solid answer and tells us that, while the suscepti-bility of the traditional operator does not diverge as thetemperature or frequency goes to zero, that of the com-posite order parameter does. It is thus this latter oper-ator that can be identified as φ ττ ′ ∆ . Note that, in caseof electron-hole symmetry, the composite hybridizationoperator O mix ≡ f † , ~S~σ f , (19)has the same singular susceptibility as O SCC since theyare both components of the same tensor operator. Thisis, however, not true any more away from electron-holesymmetry. Furthermore, superconducting correlationsare usually more dangerous, since in the Cooper chan-nel any small attraction would lead to ordering when aregular lattice model of two-channel Kondo impurities isconsidered. The knowledge of the operator content of the two-channel Kondo fixed point enables us to describe theeffects of small magnetic fields and small channelanisotropies ( J = J ). For energies and temperaturesbelow T K , the behavior of the model can be describedby the slightly perturbed two-channel Kondo fixed pointHamiltonian. For J ≈ J and in a small magnetic field, B ≪ T K , this Hamiltonian can be expressed as H = H ∗ CK ++ D / κ φ anis + D / ~h ~φ s + D − / λ ~ J − ~φ s + . . . . (20)Here H ∗ CK is the 2CK fixed point Hamiltonian, and κ is the dimensionless coupling to the channel anisotropyfield, φ anis , whereas the effective magnetic field, ~h , cou-ples to the “spin field”, φ s . Both of them are relevantperturbations at the two-channel Kondo fixed point andthey must vanish to end up with the two-channel Kondofixed point at ω, T →
0. The third coupling, λ , couplesto the leading irrelevant operator (see Tab. III), whichdominates the physics when κ = h = 0. The energy cut-off D in Eq. (20) is a somewhat arbitrary scale: it canbe though of as the energy scale below which the two-channel Kondo physics emerges, i.e. D ∼ T K . (11), as κ ≈ K R ≡ J − J ( J + J ) , (21) h ≈ B/T K , (22) λ ≈ O (1) . (23)However, the arbitrary scale D in Eq. (20) can bechanged at the expense of changing the couplings: D → D, κ → κ ( D ), h → h ( D ) and λ → λ ( D ) in such away that the physics below D remains unchanged. Thisfreedom translates to scaling equations, whose leadingterms follow from the conformal field theory results, andread dκ ( D ) dx = 12 κ ( D ) + . . . , (24) dh ( D ) dx = 12 h ( D ) + . . . , (25) dλ ( D ) dx = − λ ( D ) + . . . , (26)with x = − log D . Solving these equations with the initialconditions, D = D ∼ T K and h = h , κ = κ , λ = λ ,we can read out the energy scales at which the rescaledcouplings become of the order of one, T ∗ ∝ T K κ ∼ T K ( J − J ) ( J + J ) , (27) T h ∝ T K h ∼ B /T K . (28)At these scales the couplings of the relevant operatorsare so large that they can no longer be treated as pertur-bations. Below T ∗ the single channel Kondo behavior isrecovered in the more strongly coupled channel, while T h can be interpreted as the scale where the impurity spindynamics is frozen by the external field. The prefactors in Eqs. (28) are somewhat arbitrary,and depend slightly on the precise definition one usesto extract these scales. In this paper, we shall use thespectral function of the composite fermion to define thescales T K and T ∗ . We define T K to be the energy atwhich for K R = 0 the spectral function of the compositefermion takes half of its fixed point value (i.e. the valueassumed at ω = 0). Whereas T ∗ is the energy at whichfor K R > T h to a physically measur-able quantity. We defined it simply through the relation, T h ≡ C h B T K , (29)where the constant was chosen to be C h ≈
60. This way T h corresponds roughly to the energy at which the NFLfinite size spectrum crosses over to the low-frequency FLspectrum. IV. NRG CALCULATIONS
Prior to discussing the analytic and numerical featuresof the response functions, let us devote this section to theshort description of the NRG procedure used. All resultspresented in this paper refer to zero temperature. TheNRG calculations were performed with a discretizationparameter Λ = 2. The sum of the dimensionless cou-plings was ˜ J + ˜ J = 0 . which permits the use of an arbitrary number of Abelianand non-Abelian symmetries (see Tab. I), and incorpo-rates the spectral-sum conserving density matrix NRG(DM-NRG) algorithm. The DM-NRG method makes itpossible to generate spectral functions that satisfy spec-tral sum rules with machine precision at T = 0 tem- -9 -6 -3 ω ρ F ( ω ) T * T K K R FIG. 1: (color online) Spectral function ̺ F of the compositefermion operator, F , , ↑ as a function of ω , and the definitionof the scales T K and T ∗ . T K is defined by the relation ̺ F ( ω = T K , T = 0 , K R = 0) ≡ ̺ F ( ω = 0 , T = 0 , K R = 0). For non-zero K R the scale T ∗ is defined through ̺ F ( ω = T ∗ , T =0 , K R ) ≡ ̺ F ( ω = 0 , T = 0 , | K R | ). perature. For calculations with non-zero magnetic fieldthe use of the DM-NRG method represents a great ad-vantage over conventional NRG methods, which loosespectral weights and violate spectral sum rules. Conven-tional methods also lead to smaller or bigger jumps inthe spectral functions at ω = 0 which hinder the compu-tation of the universal scaling functions provided by thescale T h . The DM-NRG method solves all these prob-lems if a sufficient number of multiplets is kept. On anordinary desk-top computer, however, we need to use asmany symmetries as possible to keep the computationtime within reasonable limits. In the present paper, where we study the electron-hole symmetrical case, it is possible to use the symmetrygroup SU C (2) × SU C (2) × SU S (2) even in case of channelanisotropy. At these calculations the maximum numberof kept multiplets was 750 in each iteration. This cor-responds to the diagonalization of ≈

Let us first analyse the Green’s function of the localfermion, f † ,σ,α ↔ ~γ α . The composite fermion’s ( F † ,σ,α ↔ ~ Γ ,α ) Green’s function has already been looked into indetail in an earlier study of ours. We shall thereforenot discuss its analytic properties here but use it merelyas a reference to define the various energy scales in theNRG calculations (see Fig. 1). Let us note, however, thatin the large bandwidth limit, ω, T K ≪ D F , the spectralfunction of the composite fermion and that of the localfermion are simply related, ̺ f ( ω ) = 12 D F − π J ̺ F ( ω ) . (30)Thus, apart from a trivial constant shift and a minussign, the spectral function of the local fermion is thatof the composite fermion, and all features of ̺ F are alsoreflected in ̺ f .Before we discuss the NRG results, let us examine whatpredictions we have for the retarded Green’s function ofthe operator f † ,σ,α from conformal field theory. By look-ing at its quantum numbers, this operator can be identi-fied with the operator φ + σψα (see Tab. III), i.e. f † ,σ,α = A f φ + σψα + . . . , (31)with the prefactor A f ∝ / √ D F . Note that A f is a com-plex number, it does not need to be real. The dots in theequation above indicate the series of other, less relevantoperators and their descendants, which give subleadingcorrections to the correlation function of f † ,σ,α . Further-more, the expansion above holds for the long time behav-ior . The “short time part” of the correlation function of f † ,σ,α is not captured by Eq. (31), and gives a constantto G f ( ω ) of the order of ∼ /D F . Thus, apart from aprefactor A f , a constant shift and subleading terms, theGreen’s function of f † ,σ,α is that of the field φ + σψα . Aswe discuss it shortly in Appendix A, the Fourier trans-form of the Green’s function of any operator of dimension x = 1 / φ + σψα and thus f † ,σ,α have a scaling di-mension 1 / D F G f ( ω ), isalso scale invariant, D F G f ( ω, T ) ≡ ˆ g f (cid:18) ωD , TD , κ ( D ) , h ( D ) , λ ( D ) , . . . (cid:19) ,D dˆ g f d D = 0 . (32)From Eq. (32), we can deduce various important prop-erties. Let us first consider the simplest case, T = 0 and κ = h = 0. Then setting the scale D to D ∼ T K wehave ˆ g κ,h,T =0 f ( ω ) = ˆ g f (cid:18) ωD , λ , . . . (cid:19) . (33)Let us now rescale D → | ω | , and use the fixed pointscaling equation (26) to obtain λ ( D ),ˆ g f = g f ± , s | ω | D λ . (34)Assuming that this function is analytic in its second ar-gument we obtain for | ω | ≪ T K ˆ g κ,h,T =0 f ( ω ) = ˆ g f (cid:16) ωT K (cid:17) ≈ g ± f + g ′± f s | ω | T K + . . . , (35)with g ± f and g ′± f some complex expansion coefficients.Here the subscripts ± refer to the cases ω > ω < g ± f depend also on the short time behavior of G f ( t ), and arenot universal in this sense. These constants are not inde-pendent of each other. They are related by the constraintthat the Green’s function must be analytic in the upperhalf-plane. Furthermore, electron-hole symmetry impliesthat g + f = g − f and g ′ + f = − ( g ′− f ) ∗ .Relations similar to the ones above hold for the dimen-sionless spectral function. It is defined asˆ ̺ f ( ω ) ≡ − π Im ˆ g f ( ω ) , (36)and assumes the following simpler form at small frequen-cies in case of electron-hole symmetry,ˆ ̺ T,κ,h =0 f ( ω ) = r f + r ′ f s | ω | T K + . . . . (37)For ω ≫ T K the scaling dimension of the local fermionis x freef = 1 / ω -independent spec-tral function. Perturbation theory in J amounts to log-arithmic corrections of the form: 1 / − cst/ log ( T K /ω ),as it is sketched in the upper parts of Fig.-s 2 and 3.For T = 0, and κ = h = 0 using similar arguments asbefore, but now rescaling D → T we findˆ g κ,h =0 f ( ω ) = ˆ g f (cid:18) ωT , TT K , λ (cid:19) ≡ ˆ g f ωT , , r TD λ , . . . ! . (38)Then by expanding ˆ g f we obtain the following scalingform for the low temperature behavior of the spectralfunction,ˆ ̺ h,κ =0 f ( ω ) = Θ f (cid:16) ωT (cid:17) + r TT K ˜Θ f (cid:16) ωT (cid:17) + . . . , (39)with Θ f and ˜Θ f universal scaling functions. The large ω -behavior is a result of perturba-tion theory. T must be smaller than T K . The asymptotic propertiesof Θ f and ˜Θ f can be extracted by making use of thefacts that ( i ) ˆ g f ( ω, T ) must be analytic for ω ≪ T , ( ii )that Eq. (39) should reproduce the T → ω ≫ T , and ( iii ) that by electron-hole symmetry,ˆ ̺ f must be an even function of ω . The issuing asymp-totic properties together with those of the other scalingfunctions defined later are summarized in Table V. Theasymptotic properties of the real part, Re ˆ g f , can be ex-tracted from those of ˆ ̺ f by performing a Hilbert trans-form Re ˆ g f ( ω ) = P Z d˜ ω ˆ ̺ f (˜ ω ) ω − ˜ ω (40)with P the principal part. The obtained features aresketched in Fig. 2 for T > κ = h = 0.Let us now investigate the effect of channel anisotropy,i.e. κ = 0 at T = 0 temperature and no magnetic field h = 0. In this case, we can rescale D to D = | ω | to obtainˆ ̺ T,h =0 f ( ω ) = K ± f (cid:16) ωT ∗ (cid:17) + s | ω | T K ˜ K ± f (cid:16) ωT ∗ (cid:17) + . . . , (41) ≈ + s ωT K ∼ cst + vuut T ∗ ω log ωT K log T ∗ T K log T ∗ T K ˆ ̺ f ( ω ) ∼ ωT ∗ ! The su-perscripts ± refer to the cases of positive or negativeanisotropies: the superscript “+” is used when the cou-pling is larger in the channel where we measure theGreen’s function of f † ,α,σ . The asymptotics of the univer-sal functions K ± f and ˜ K ± f can be obtained through similarscaling arguments as before and they differ only slightlyfrom those of Θ f and ˜Θ f (see Table V for a summary).The properties of ˆ ̺ T,h =0 f ( ω ) are summarized in Fig. 3.A remarkable feature of the spectral function is that itcontains a correction ∼ p T ∗ / | ω | . This correction canbe obtained by doing perturbation theory in the smallparameter κ ( ω ) at the two-channel Kondo fixed point.From the asymptotic forms in Table V we find thatin the local fermion’s susceptibility a new scale, T ∗∗ f ∼√ T ∗ T K appears as a result of the competition be-tween the leading irrelevant operator and the channelanisotropy: It is only in the regime T ∗∗ f < ω < T K thatthe leading irrelevant operator determines the dominantscaling behavior of the local fermion’s susceptibility, i.e.,we observe the true two-channel Kondo physics. Theexpected properties of ˆ ρ f and the real part of its dimen-sionless Green’s function ˆ g f in the presence of channelasymmetry are summarized in Fig. 3. These analytic ex-pectations are indeed met by our NRG results. Fig. 4.( a ) depicts the spectral function of f † , ,σ forseveral values of K R as a function of ω/T K on a loga-rithmic scale. The overall scaling is very similar to theone sketched in Fig. 3, except that the high tempera-ture plateau is missing; this is due to the relatively largevalue of T K , which is only one decade smaller than thebandwidth cut-off. Figures 4.( b − e ) are the numericalconfirmations of the asymptotics stated. In all these fig-ures dashed straight lines are to demonstrate deviationsfrom the expected behavior. In Fig. 4.( b ) we show thesquare root-like asymptotics in the 2CK scaling regimefor the channel symmetric case. This behavior is a con-sequence of the dimension of the leading irrelevant op-erator as it has just been discussed. In Fig. 4.( c ) thesame asymptotics is shown in the same region in caseof a finite channel anisotropy, whereas below them Fig.4.( d ) demonstrates (1 /ω ) / -like behavior resulting fromthe relevant perturbation of the 2CK fixed point Hamil-tonian with channel anisotropy. They were ob-tained by performing the Hilbert transformations numer-ically. They should show a three-peak structure based onthe analytic considerations (see Fig. 3). There are twolow-frequency peaks clearly visible, associated with thecross-overs at T ∗ and T K . Furthermore there should bea non-universal peak at the cut-off. For relatively largechannel anisotropies, where T ∗ ∼ T K , the former twopeaks cannot be clearly separated in Fig. 6. Also, due tothe large value of T K ∼ the band cut-off, D F , the peakat ω ∼ T K and the smeared singularity at ω = D F merge to a single non-universal feature in our NRG curves.Let us now turn to the effect of a finite magnetic field, B = 0 for the case T = 0 , K R = 0. As h and κ scalethe same way in the 2CK scaling regime, the argumentconcerning the κ = 0 case can be repeated with minormodifications. Now, however, the spin SU S (2) symmetryis violated, and therefore the spectral functions of f † ,α, ↑ and f † ,α, ↓ become different, and they are no longer eveneither. Nevertheless, due to particle-hole symmetry, theyare still related through the relationsˆ ρ f, ↑ ( ω, T, κ, h, . . . ) = ˆ ρ f, ↓ ( − ω, T, κ, h, . . . ) , ˆ ρ f, ↑ ( ω, T, κ, h, . . . ) = ˆ ρ f, ↓ ( ω, T, κ, − h, . . . ) . The same curves are depicted asa function of ω/T h in Fig. 8, which demonstrates the ex-istence of the universal scaling curves, B f,σ , i.e. that byusing the scale, T h the local fermion’s spectral functionscan be scaled on top of each other for small enough mag-netic fields. Here the splitting of the Kondo resonance inthe energy-dependent scattering cross section appears asa minimum at ω ∼ T h . Unfortunately, for even smallermagnetic fields the accuracy of our numerical data is in-sufficient to tell if the splitting of the Kondo resonancesurvives in the limit B →
0, as conjectured in Ref. 24. Inthe data with
B/T K > . × − , there seems to be al-ways a shallow minimum in the spectral function, and wesee no indication for crossing of the curves as the magni-tude of the field is reduced. If there is indeed no crossingof the spectral functions and if the deviation from the p | ω | -behavior indeed starts at ω ≈ T h ∼ B /T K , whichis the only natural assumption, then, from exact BetheAnsatz results it would immediately follow that theremust always be a splitting of the Kondo resonance, since P σ [ ̺ fσ ( ω = 0 , B ) − ̺ fσ ( ω = 0 , ∼ B ln( T K /B ), while P σ [ ̺ fσ ( ω = T h , B ) − ̺ fσ ( ω = 0 , ∼ | B | wouldfollow from the pure p | ω | -dependence of the spectralfunction at B = 0. However, these analytical argumentsdo not constitute a real proof. With small modifications, the analysis presented inthis subsection carries over to essentially any fermionicoperator that has quantum numbers c = j = 1 / c = j = 1 / φ ψ and φ ψ , only the high-frequency be-havior ( ω > T K ) and the normalization factors becomedifferent. Typically, a local operator having the samecharge and spin quantum numbers as φ ψα will have afinite overlap with them. However, in some cases the in-ternal Ising quantum number of an operator may preventan overlap and, of course, one can also construct opera-tors by, say, differentiating with respect to the time, thatwould correspond to descendant fields. VI. SPIN SPECTRAL FUNCTIONS ANDSUSCEPTIBILITIES
In this section, we shall discuss the properties of thespin operator, ~S , which is the most obvious example of abosonic operator of spin j = 1 and charge quantum num-bers c = c = 0 that overlaps with the scaling operator φ s . There are, however, many operators that have thesame quantum numbers: two examples are the so-calledchannel spin operator, ~S C ≡ f † , ~σf , − f † , ~σf , , (44)or a composite channel spin operator ~S CC ≡ F † , ~σf , − F † , ~σf , . (45)Our discussion can be easily generalized to these opera-tors with minor modifications.The analysis of the spin spectral function goes alongthe lines of the previous subsection. First we recall thatthe field ~φ s appears in the expansion of the spin operator, ~S = A s ~φ s + . . . , (46)with A s ∼ / √ T K ∼ / √ D . Therefore, the appropriatedimensionless scale invariant Green’s function (usuallyreferred to as the dynamical spin susceptibility ) is definedas ˆ g S (cid:18) ωD , TD , κ , h , . . . (cid:19) ≡ T K G S ( ω, T, κ , . . . , D ) . (47)We shall not repeat here all the steps of the deriva-tion, only summarize the main results. In the absenceof a magnetic field, h = 0 the spectral function of thespin operator is odd. Furthermore, at T = 0 and for noanisotropy, κ = 0, the spectral function has a jump at ω = 0, ˆ ̺ T,h,κ =0 S ( ω ) ≈ sgn( ω ) h r S + r ′ S s | ω | T K + . . . i . (48)This jump corresponds to a logarithmically divergentdynamical susceptibility, Re χ S ( ω ) = − Re G S ( ω ) ∝ ln( T K /ω ) /T K .For ω ≫ T K the impurity spin becomes asymptoticallyfree, decoupled from the conduction electrons, thereforeits ω -dependence is set by its scaling dimension at thefree fermion fixed point where x freeS = 0. It has the im-plication that its correlation fuction decays as ω − cor-responding to the Curie-Weiss susceptibility with loga-rithmic corrections present, known from Bethe Ansatzresults and from perturbation theory.At finite temperatures T = 0, but for κ = h = 0, weobtain the following scaling form for T, ω ≪ T K :ˆ ̺ h,κ =0 S ( ω ) ≡ Θ S (cid:16) ωT (cid:17) + r TT K ˜Θ S (cid:16) ωT (cid:17) + . . . . Bottom:Sketch of ˆ ̺ S = T K ̺ S = − T K Im χ S ( ω ) /π for T = 0 and K R = 0 , B = 0 as a function of log ( ω/T K ). Asymptotics in-dicated for ω < T K were derived through scaling arguments.The large ω -behavior is a result of perturbation theory. The asymptotic properties of the scaling functions Θ S and ˜Θ S are listed in Table V.In case of finite channel anisotropy but zero tempera-ture we obtain for ω ≪ T K the scaling formˆ ̺ T,h =0 S ( ω ) ≈ K S (cid:16) ωT ∗ (cid:17) + s | ω | T K ˜ K S (cid:16) ωT ∗ (cid:17) + . . . . (50)The asymptotic properties of K S , ˜ K S are only slightly dif-ferent from those of Θ S , ˜Θ S (see Table V): below T ∗ thespectral function displays analytic behavior, while theregime ω > T ∗ is governed by non-analytical correctionsassociated with the 2CK fixed point. In this regime a fea-ture worth mentioning is the appearance of a correction, ∼ T ∗ /ω to K S , more precisely, the lack of a p | T ∗ /ω | correction. This is due to the fact that the anisotropyoperator is odd, while the spin operator is even with re-spect to swapping the channel labels. Therefore there isno first order correction to the spin-spin correlation func-tion in κ , and the leading corrections are only of secondorder, i.e., of the form κ /ω . From the comparison ofthe terms in K S and ˜ K S it also follows the existence of − R e ˆ g S ( ω ) ∼ log T K max { T,T ∗ } ∼ T K ω cst log ωTK log ωT K log max { T,T ∗ } T K ∼ log T K ω FIG. 12: (color online) Sketch of the real part of the di-mensionless Green’s function of ~S , Re ˆ g S = T K Re χ S ( ω ) ≡ T K Re G S ( ω ) for T, T ∗ > ω/T K ). another cross-over scale, T ∗∗ s ∼ (cid:16) T ∗ T K (cid:17) / , (51)that separates the regimes governed by the leading rel-evant and leading irrelevant operators. Here we usedthe subscript s to indicate that this scale T ∗∗ s is differ-ent from the scale T ∗∗ f introduced in relation to the localfermion’s spectral function. The asymptotic propertiesof ˆ ̺ S ∝ χ S ( ω ) for T > , K R = 0 and T = 0 , K R = 0 aresketched in the upper and lower parts of Fig. 11, whilethe behavior of the real part is presented in Fig. 12.The expectations above are indeed nicely born out bythe NRG calculations: Fig. 13 shows the impurity spinspectral functions as a function of ω/T K for various K R -s and their asymptotic properties. First, in Fig. 13.( b )we show a very small logarithmic ω -dependence that weobserved below T K at the 2CK fixed point. The am-plitude of this log( ω )-dependence was reduced as we in-creased the number of multiplets. It appears that thisbehavior is not derived from the lognormal smoothingof the NRG data, and it may be due to some approxi-mations used in the spectral sum-conserving DM-NRGprocedure. In Fig. 13.( c ) we show the square root-likebehavior around the 2CK Kondo fixed point which isattributed to the leading irrelevant operator, while Fig.13.( d ) shows that first order corrections coming from thescaling of the channel anisotropy are indeed absent justas we stated above, and only second order terms appear,resulting in an 1 /ω -like behavior. Finally, Fig. 13.( e )demonstrates the linear ω -dependence, which is charac-teristic of most bosonic operators in the proximity of anFL fixed point. All these findings support very nicely theanalytical properties summarized in Table V.The spin spectral functions also collapse to a univer-sal scaling curve describing the cross-over from the two-channel Kondo to the single channel Kondo fixed points,when they are plotted against ω/T ∗∗ . This universal datacollapse is demonstrated in Fig. 14 where the impurity4 -6 -3 ω / T K ρ S ( ω ) -16 -14 ln( ω / T K ) ρ S ( ω )

These curves meet the expected behavior sketchedin Fig. 12: they display a logarithmic increase at high-frequencies and saturate at values that correspond toRe χ S ∼ ln( T K /T ∗ ) / T K .Let us finally discuss the case, T = κ = 0 but h =0. Then the components of ~S are distinguished by themagnetic field: The spectral function of S z has almostthe same features as for finite channel anisotropies. Since S z is a hermitian operator, its spectral function remainsodd and acquires the following corrections in the differentscaling regimesˆ ̺ S,z ≡ B

First of all, the op-erators S ± are not Hermitian, and therefore their spectralfunctions are not symmetrical. The spectral functions ofthe operators S x and S y are, however, symmetrical, andtheir Green’s functions (and susceptibilities) are relatedthrough G xS = G yS = 14 ( G + − S + G − + S ) . This scaling also turned out to be valid forvalues of B higher than the ones for fermions (see Fig.17). The scaling functions B S,z and B S, ± behave verysimilarly. This is somewhat surprising, since the naiveexpectation would be to have a resonance in B S, + , justas in the local fermion’s spectral function, that wouldcorrespond to a spin-flip excitation at the renormalizedspin splitting, T h .excitations”.However, quite remarkably, a resonance seems to ap-pear in χ ” S,z ( ω ) /ω at a frequency ω ∼ T h , while we findno resonance in χ ” S, ± ( ω ) /ω . This can be seen in Fig. 18,where T K ̺ ( ω ) /ω is plotted for the different spin compo-nents as a function of ω/T K for various magnetic fieldvalues. This seems to indicate that the spin coherentlyoscillates between the spin up and spin down compo-nents, while its x, y components simply relax to theirequilibrium value. VII. SUPERCONDUCTING CORRELATIONS
In the last section, let us investigate the local super-conducting correlation functions. These deserve specialattention, since many heavy fermion compounds displayexotic superconducting phases that may possibly be in-duced by local two-channel Kondo physics. The mostobvious candidates for the corresponding local operatorshave been identified in Section III, and are the localchannel-asymmetric superconducting operator, O SC = f † , , ↑ f † , , ↓ − f † , , ↓ f † , , ↑ , and the composite fermion su- ρ S , + ( ω ) / × - 2 × - 2 × - 3 × - 3 × - 4 × - 4 × - 5 × - 5 ρ S , z ( ω ) -3 ω / T h ρ S , - ( ω ) / (a)(b)(c) B / T K B S,+ B S,z B S,- <<<

(54)where the expansion coefficient A SCC can be estimatedfrom the high-frequency behavior of the correlation func-6tion up to logarithmic prefactors as A SCC ∼ √ T K /D F .While for the impurity spin, one can exclude logarith-mic corrections to the expansion coefficient A S in Eq. 46based upon the exact Bethe Ansatz results, this is notpossible for the superconducting correlation function. Infact, we know that in the expansion of the compositefermion itself the correct prefactor is A F ∼ J/ √ T K ∼ / (cid:0) √ T K ln( D F /T K ) (cid:1) . Therefore, similar logarithmicfactors could appear in the prefactor A SCC . Neverthe-less, in the following, we shall disregard possible logarith-mic corrections, and define the normalized dimensionlessand scale-invariant correlation function through the rela-tion, D F T K G SCC ( ω ) = ˆ g SCC ( ω ) . (55)Apart from its overall amplitude and its high-frequencybehavior, in the low-frequency scaling regimes the spec-tral function of the composite superconductor operatorbehaves the same way as that of S z (see Tab. III). There-fore we merely state its asymptotics without further ex-planation.In the absence of anisotropy and magnetic field, κ = h = 0, for ω ≪ T K the spectral function becomes a uni-versal function, ˆ ρ SCC ( ω/T ), whose behavior is describedby the scaling form,ˆ ̺ h,κ =0 SCC ( ω ) ≈ Θ SCC (cid:16) ωT (cid:17) + r TT K ˜Θ SCC (cid:16) ωT (cid:17) + . . . , (56)while in the presence of anisotropy, but at T = 0 tem-perature and for h = 0, the spectral functions behaveas ˆ ̺ T,h =0 SCC ( ω ) ≈ K SCC (cid:16) ωT ∗ (cid:17) + s | ω | T K ˜ K SCC (cid:16) ωT ∗ (cid:17) + . . . . The dependence on the anisotropy, together with the ∼ p | ω | , the ∼ /ω and the ∼ ω scalingregimes are plotted in Fig. 19. Fig. 20 displays the real part of the dimensionlessGreen’s function, that is essentially the real part of thesuperconducting susceptibility. Notice that there is a small prefactor in front of the log-arithm that arises from the asymptotically free behaviorat large frequencies. The universal collapse of the low-frequency part of thecurves in terms of ω/T ∗ is shown in Fig. 21. The cross-over curve, K SCC (cid:0) ωT ∗ (cid:1) is very similar to the spin cross-over function, K S , and displays a plateau at large fre-quencies from which it deviates as 1 /ω , until it finallyreaches the linear frequency regime below T ∗ .Application of a magnetic field has effects very similarto the anisotropy, as shown in the upper part of Fig. 22.In Fig. 22 the small logarithmic increase at small fre-quencies is more visible. As mentioned before, this in-crease is most likely an artifact of the spectral sum con-serving approximation of Ref. 41 and it is due to the7 -6 -3 ω / T K - R e g S CC ( ω ) K R < FIG. 20: (color online) Real part of the dimensionless Green’sfunction of O SCC : Re ˆ g SCC = D F /T K Re G SCC as a functionof ω/T K for different values of K R . way this method redistributes spectral weights. This isbased on the observation that the slope of the logarithmgets smaller if we increase the number of multiplets kept. These curves also collapse to a single universal curve asa function of ω/T h , as shown in the lower part of Fig. 22.Finally, in Fig. 23, we show the numerically ob-tained spectral function and the corresponding dimen-sionless susceptibility of the non-composite superconduc-tor, O SC = f † , , ↑ f † , , ↓ − f † , , ↓ f † , , ↑ . Clearly, this spectralfunction displays no plateau below T K , but it exhibits alinear in ω behavior below T K , and correspondingly, thesusceptibility Re χ SC remains finite for ω → φ ττ ′ ∆ . Thismay be due to the difference in the Ising quantum num-bers, which we did not identify. Turning on a small anisotropy or magneticfield does not influence substantially the spectral proper-ties of the corresponding Green’s function, either. VIII. CONCLUSIONS
In the present paper we gave a detailed discussion ofthe spectral properties of the two-channel Kondo model. We analyzed the properties of the correlation functionsof various local operators in the presence of a channelanisotropy and an external magnetic field. In particular,we studied numerically and analytically the correlationfunctions of the local fermions, f α,σ ≡ f ,α,σ , the compo-nents of the impurity spin, ~S , the local superconductivityoperator, O SC ≡ f † iσ y f † , and the composite supercon-ductor operator, f † ~S~σ iσ y f † . There are, however, many operatorsthat have quantum numbers identical with the scalingfields. Here we picked operators having the right quan-tum numbers, and at the same time having the largestpossible scaling dimension at the free fermion fixed point, where J , J →
0. These are the operators, whose spec-tral functions are expected to have the largest spectralweight at small temperatures (among those having thesame quantum numbers), and which are therefore theprimary candidates for an order parameter, when a lat-tice of 2CK impurities is formed, as is the case in someUranium and Cerium-based compounds. The operatorsabove are, of course, also of physical interest on theirown: the spectral function of f α,σ is related to the tun-neling spectrum into the conduction electron see at theimpurity site, the Green’s function of ~S is just the dy-namical spin susceptibility that can be measured underinelastic neutron scattering, and finally the local super-conducting operators are candidates for superconductingordering in heavy fermion materials. We remark that, inthe electron-hole symmetrical case, the other componentsof the operator multiplet that contains the composite su-perconducting order parameter O SCC would correspondto a composite channel-mixing charge density ordering.Of course, the susceptibilities of this operator has thesame properties as that of χ SCC ( ω ).In addition to these operators, there are two moreoperators of possible interest: the so-called compositeFermion’s Green’s function is related to the T -matrix, T ( ω ) that describes the scattering properties off a two-channel impurity (or the conductance through it in caseof a quantum dot), and was already studied in detail inRef. . A further candidate is the channel anisotropy op-erator. This has also a logarithmically divergent suscep-tibility, and would also be associated with a compositeorbital ordering in case of a two-channel Kondo latticesystem. high precision data. To identifythe scaling operators in this case, we reconstructed theboundary conformal field theory of Affleck and Ludwigfor this symmetry classification. We then establishedthe scaling properties of the various dynamical correla-tion functions and identified the corresponding univer-sal cross-over functions and their asymptotic properties, based upon simple but robust scaling arguments. In thisway, universal scaling functions describing the cross-overfrom the two-channel Kondo fixed point to the singlechannel Kondo fixed point (for J = J ) and to the mag-netically polarized fixed point (for B = 0) have beenintroduced, which we then determined numerically. Weemphasize again that presently these universal cross-overfunctions can only be determined through the applica-tion of DM-NRG, and in fact, for the scaling curves inthe presence of a magnetic field the application of theDM-NRG method was absolutely necessary. Our numerical calculations confirmed all our analyt-ical expectations, and they confirmed that actually, inthe presence of an applied magnetic field, or channelanisotropy, the two-channel Kondo scaling regime is9rather restricted, and it may also depend on the physicalquantity considered. In Fig.24 we sketched the regimeswhere the pure two-channel Kondo behavior can be ob-served. Notice that in the presence of anisotropy thetwo-channel Kondo scaling regime of the spin suscepti-bility has a boundary that differs from the boundary ofthe two-channel Kondo scaling regime of the T -matrix.Some of the spectral functions show rather remarkablefeatures: In a magnetic field, e.g., the spectral functionof the composite fermion, F † α, ↓ shows a universal peakat a frequency ω = T h . This peak corresponds to spin-flip excitations of the impurity spin at the renormalizedmagnetic field. Remarkably, this peak is accompaniedby a dip of the same size at the same frequency for spindown electrons. This dip is actually very surprising andis much harder to explain. Similar features appear butwith opposite sign in the local fermions’ spectral func-tions. Even more surprisingly, this resonant feature iscompletely absent in the spectral function of the spin op-erators, S ± .One of the interesting results of our numerical anal-ysis was that only the composite superconductor O SC has a logarithmically divergent susceptibility. This isthus the primary candidate for superconducting orderingfor a 2CK lattice system. We remark here that whilefor a single impurity the superconducting susceptibil-ity seems to have a rather small amplitude, Re χ SC ∼ T K /D F ln( T K /T ), in a lattice model the mass of thecarriers is also renormalized, and therefore the band-width is expected to get renormalized as D F → T K . Asa result, the corresponding susceptibility can be ratherlarge, and drive, in principle, a superconducting instabil-ity. Interestingly, although the results are still somewhatcontroversial, in the two-channel Kondo lattice theselocal superconducting correlations do not seem to inducea superconducting transition. This may be, however, anartifact of the standard two-channel Kondo lattice model, which does not account properly for the orbital and bandstructure of an f -electron material. We believe, that ina more realistic lattice of two-channel Kondo impurities acomposite superconducting order develops, similar to theone suggested in Ref. 44. However, DMFT + DM-NRGcalculations would be needed to confirm this belief.Acknowledgement: We are especially grateful to L.Borda for making his code available for the Hilbert trans-formations and for the lot of valuable discussions. APPENDIX A: SCALING PROPERTIES OFTWO-POINT FUNCTIONS
In this appendix, we discuss the scaling properties ofvarious scaling functions. Essentially, we use the gener-alized Callan-Symanzik equations. For the sake of sim-plicity, let us first focus on the retarded Green’s functionof the z -component of the operator φ s , G ( t, H ) ≡ − i h [ φ zs ( t ) , φ zs (0)] i H θ ( t ) , (A1)and its Fourier transform, G ( ω, T ). Let us investigate thescaling properties of this function in the absence of mag-netic field. From the fact that φ s is the field conjugateto the external “magnetic field”, h , and that the parti-tion function (generating function) must be scale invari-ant under the renormalization group, we easily get thefollowing differential equation D ∂ G ∂D + X µ β µ ∂ G ∂u µ u µ + (2 β h − G ≈ , (A2)with u µ a shorthand notation for the dimensionless cou-plings, { u µ } = { κ, λ, . . . } that occur in H , and β µ thecorresponding β -functions,d ln u µ d x = β µ ( { u ν } ) , (A3)with x = − ln( D ) the scaling variable. In the vicinity ofthe two-channel Kondo fixed point the β -functions justassume their fixed point value, which are just the renor-malization group eigenvalues, y µ = d − x µ , with the di-mension d = 1, since all operators are local and live intime only. Since, for φ s we have y h = 1 /
2, in the closevicinity of the two-channel Kondo fixed point we obtaind G d D ≈ . (A4)One can also easily show that D d G d D = − ω d G d ω . (A5)These relations imply that, G ( ω, T, D ) is scale invariant,and is only a function of ω/D and T /D . Clearly, similarequations hold for the correlation functions of all opera-tors with dimension 1 /
2. Furthermore, the above scalingproperty can easily be modified for operators having di-mensions y µ = 1 / For a recent review see P. A. Lee,
