Jafari † Department of Physics, Shahid Beheshti University, G.C., Evin, Tehran 19839, Iran (Dated: August 4, 2020)Competitive balance model has been proposed as an extension to the balance model to address theconflict of interests in signed networks [1]. In this model two different paradigms compete with eachother due to the competitive interests to dominate the system and impose their own values. Usingmean-field solution method in this paper, we examine the thermal behavior of the competitivebalance model. Our results show that under a certain temperature, the symmetry between twocompetitive interests will spontaneously break which leads to a discrete phase transition. So, startingwith a heterogeneous signed network, if agents aim to ultimately decrease tension stemming frombalance theory, evolution ultimately chooses only one of the existing interests and stability ariseswhere one paradigm dominates the network. The critical temperature depends linearly on thenumber of nodes, which was a linear dependence in the thermal balance theory as well. Finally theresults obtained through the mean-field theory are verified by a series of simulations.
I. INTRODUCTION
Balance theory in its original form is based on tripletinteraction in an homogeneous signed network. Recently, the balance model has been modified to address het-erogeneity in the real world [2–4]. In this regard, theCompetitive Balance Model has been proposed as an ex-tension of the balanced model to emphasize the conflictof interests in formation of balance in real societies [1].In this paper we aim to study the Competitive BalanceModel in the presence of thermal fluctuations. The study of signed networks originally dates back tothe 1940’s when Heider proposed the balance theory asa psychological hypothesis for the first time [5]. He ex-plains the causes of conflict in a triplet relationship. Ac-cording to this theory, a triplet relationship is balancedif all its relations are friendly or two friends have a com-mon enemy, otherwise imbalanced. Cartwright and Har-rary [6] went beyond the conceptual framework of Hei-der’s psychological theory and presented it in a graph-theoretic model. It has been stated that a signed graphis structurally balanced if all its triads are balanced, ifnot the graph is unbalanced. This later led to Antal et al.[7] proposing two distinguished discrete dynamics, basedon introducing a Hamiltonian. Then Kulakowski estab-lished a continues time model by a set of differential equa-tions,describing the evolution of relations, during timeand figured out that the state of balance is always attain-able in a finite time [8]. Following the continuous-timemodel of Kulakowski et al. analysis [9] revealed that de-pending on the initial density of friendship relations aphase transition is taken place from a bipolar state toutopia.Indeed balance theory has been successfully applied tomany field of science from international relations [10– ∗ [email protected] † g [email protected] − ± , ∓ i which indicates friendship or enmity based on thecompetitive paradigms. Evolution of the system has beenstudied in [1] in the absence of thermal fluctuations. Ithas been observed that though the system is symmetri-cal respect to both paradigms, still over the evolution thesymmetry is broken and in the end one of the paradigmsdominates the system. In the absence of thermal fluctuations, the system tendsto settle in the global minima of the energy landscape. a r X i v : . [ phy s i c s . s o c - ph ] A ug But thermal fluctuations work in a way that disturbs thistendency and makes the entropy content of the systemincrease. There is a phase transition occurring when com-petition between the tendency toward energy minimiza-tion and entropy maximization is taking place. In thispaper we aim to consider thermal fluctuations which areusually inevitable in real systems. In order to examinethermal fluctuations in the Competitive Balance Model,we used two approaches, concerning mean-field theory, and Monte-Carlo simulation. We show that the edge-edge correlation is a measure which indicate the state ofthe system. This variable results in two temperature de-pendent self-consistent equations, for which we can haveone, three, five or seven simultaneously solutions. Thediscrete phase transition is observed for our model, andthe stability of solutions or fixed points, depending ontemperature, is being discussed. Finally, we confirm ouranalytical solutions via Monte-Carlo simulation.
II. COMPETITIVE BALANCE MODEL
Competitive Balance Model, an extended adaptationof structural balance theory, is build on triplet interac-tions in heterogeneous signed networks with two differentcauses of friendship and hostility. The structural balancemodel in its pure form is based on one type of relationwhich are labeled with +1 as friendship and − ± ∓ i respectively.Inspired by structural balance theory the Hamiltonian ofcompetitive balanced model is defined as follows: −H = (cid:60) (cid:88) i,j,k σ ij σ jk σ ki + (cid:61) (cid:88) i,j,k σ ij σ jk σ ki , (1)where σ ij = {± , ∓ i } indicates the edge between nodes i and j , also (cid:60) [ ... ] and (cid:61) [ ... ] are real and imaginary partfor sum of product of the edges over all triangles in thenetwork. Utilizing a complex number e.g. ∓ i , as a labelfor describing the second type of relations in our hetero-geneous network has some advantages which are listed asfollows: • Extension of structural balance Hamiltonian in thisway makes it symmetrical to both type of real andimaginary edges. • All types of triangles are equally weighted in theHamiltonian, it means that they are treated ho-mogeneously , or to put it simply no triangles arepreferred over others. • With this Hamiltonian the system moves towardsreducing unbalanced triangles in the network andno matter if the final configuration is a mix of tri-angles which their edges belong to different concep-tualizations of friendship and hostility. At zero temperature the dynamic of Competitive Bal-ance Model is aimed at minimizing tension and over-whelming one type of relations in the network (if thesystem is not trapped in jammed states). But thermalfluctuations prevent the tension from completely vanish-ing. In other words at nonzero temperature there is acompetition between tendency to reach the state of bal-ance, and to destroy the ordered balanced state owing tothermal fluctuation. When temperature is high enoughthe system is in a completely random configuration. Onthe other hand when temperature is low enough thermalfluctuation are not as much as to be able to take the sys-tem out of balanced state. It is interesting to know towhat extent of temperature the system withstands ther-mal fluctuations and remains in the state of balance. In this study we use ERGMs (exponential randomgraph models) to obtain Boltzmann probability den-sity function in canonical ensemble which is defined as P ( G ) ∝ e − β H ( G ) , where β = / T and T is temperature[35]. III. ANALYTICAL MEAN-FIELD SOLUTION
In this section we present a mean-field solution forCompetitive Balance Model which provides analyticalexpressions for involved quantities describing the stateof the system. we consider a fully connected graph inwhich everybody knows everyone else. Therefore we ex-pect the accuracy of the mean-field approximation to besignificantly increased for sufficiently large network sizes.Let’s start by calculating the mean of edges (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) ,which, in terms of statistical Mechanics is defined as fol-lows: (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) = (cid:88) G σ ij P ( G ) , (2)where P ( G ) = e − β H ( G ) / Z is the Boltzmann probability ofa given micro-state G and Z is the partition function ofthe system which is defined as Z = (cid:80) G e − β H ( G ) , so werewrite (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) as below: (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) = 1 Z (cid:88) G σ ij e − β H ( G ) . (3)In order to apply mean-field approximation we need torewrite the Hamiltonian as H = H (cid:48) + H ij , in which H ij includes all terms in the Hamiltonian which contain σ ij and H (cid:48) is the remaining terms. Then H ij is : −H ij = (cid:60) σ ij (cid:88) k (cid:54) = i,j σ jk σ ki + (cid:61) σ ij (cid:88) k (cid:54) = i,j σ jk σ ki . (4)So we rewrite the (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) as follows: (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) = 1 Z (cid:88) G σ ij e − β H ( G ) = 1 Z (cid:88) { σ (cid:54) = σ ij } e − β H (cid:48) (cid:88) { σ ij = ± , ∓ i } σ ij e − β H ij = (cid:80) { σ (cid:54) = σ ij } e − β H (cid:48) (cid:80) { σ ij = ± , ± i } σ ij e − β H ij (cid:80) { σ (cid:54) = σ ij } e − β H (cid:48) (cid:80) { σ ij = ± , ± i } e − β H ij = (cid:104) (cid:80) { σ ij = ± , ± i } σ ij e − β H ij (cid:105) G (cid:48) (cid:104) (cid:80) { σ ij = ± , ± i } e − β H ij (cid:105) G (cid:48) , (5)where (cid:104) ... (cid:105) G (cid:48) is the average over all configurations whichdo not contain edge σ ij . Using mean-field approxima-tion we expand the above fraction by replacing the edgevariables with their averages. Also all correlation termsrelated to edge variables turns to be the product oftheir average in this approximation. For example if wename an edge variable X then by this approximation wehave (cid:104) XX (cid:105) = (cid:104) X (cid:105)(cid:104) X (cid:105) . Employing this method we es-timate the above fraction. If we define p = (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) and q = (cid:104) σ ij σ jk (cid:105) = q r + q i , then we have: p = sinh (cid:16) ( n − q r + q i ) (cid:17) + i sinh (cid:16) ( n − q r − q i ) (cid:17) cosh (cid:16) ( n − q r + q i ) (cid:17) + cosh (cid:16) ( n − q r − q i ) (cid:17) , (6)in which real and imaginary part of p are as follows: p r ≡ (cid:60) [ p ] = sinh (cid:16) ( n − q r + q i ) (cid:17) cosh (cid:16) ( n − q r (cid:17) cosh (cid:16) ( n − q i (cid:17) ,p i ≡ (cid:61) [ p ] = sinh (cid:16) ( n − q r − q i ) (cid:17) cosh (cid:16) ( n − q r (cid:17) cosh (cid:16) ( n − q i (cid:17) . (7)As it can be seen from (7) (cid:104) σ ij (cid:105) is associated with (cid:104) σ ij σ jk (cid:105) . Therefore derivation of q is needed to find p .Hence let us calculate (cid:104) σ ij σ jk (cid:105) . For this purpose we needto rewrite Hamiltonian as H = H (cid:48) + H ijk where H ijk isall terms in the Hamiltonian which contain σ ij or σ jk orboth and H (cid:48) is the remaining terms. Therefore we have: −H ikj = (cid:60) σ jk (cid:88) (cid:96) (cid:54) = i,j,k σ j(cid:96) σ (cid:96)k + (cid:61) σ jk (cid:88) (cid:96) (cid:54) = i,j,k σ j(cid:96) σ (cid:96)k + (cid:60) σ ki (cid:88) (cid:96) (cid:54) = i,j,k σ k(cid:96) σ (cid:96)i + (cid:61) σ ki (cid:88) (cid:96) (cid:54) = i,j,k σ k(cid:96) σ (cid:96)i + (cid:60) ( σ ij σ jk σ ki ) + (cid:61) ( σ ij σ jk σ ki ) . (8)From statistical mechanics we have: (cid:104) σ jk σ ki (cid:105) = 1 Z (cid:88) G σ jk σ ki e − β H ( G ) = 1 Z (cid:88) { σ (cid:54) = σ ij } e − β H (cid:48) (cid:88) { σ ij ,σ jk = ± , ∓ i } σ ij Σ jk e − β H ikj = (cid:80) { σ (cid:54) = σ jk ,σ ki } e − β H (cid:48) (cid:80) { σ jk ,σ ki = ± , ± i } σ jk σ ki e − β H ikj (cid:80) { σ (cid:54) = σ jk ,σ ki } e − β H (cid:48) (cid:80) { σ jk ,σ ki = ± , ± i } e − β H ikj = (cid:104) (cid:80) { σ jk ,σ ki = ± , ± i } σ jk σ ki e − β H ijk (cid:105) G (cid:48) (cid:104) (cid:80) { σ jk ,σ ki = ± , ± i } e − β H ijk (cid:105) G (cid:48) . (9)Similar to our previous calculations we have: (cid:104) σ jk σ ki (cid:105) MF ≈ f ( p, q ; n, β ) g ( p, q ; n, β ) , in which: f ( p, q ; n, β ) = e β ( n − q r + q i )+ β ( p r + p i ) + e − β ( n − q r + q i )+ β ( p r + p i ) − e − β ( p r + p i ) − e β ( n − q r − q i ) − β ( p r + p i ) − e − β ( n − q r − q i ) − β ( p r + p i ) + 2 e β ( p r + p i ) + 2 i e β ( n − q r + β ( p r − p i ) − i e β ( n − q i + β ( p i − p r ) − i e − β ( n − q i + β ( p i − p r ) + 2 i e − β ( n − q r + β ( p r − p i ) ,g ( p, q ; n, β ) = e β ( n − q r + q i )+ β ( p r + p i ) + e − β ( n − q r + q i )+ β ( p r + p i ) + 2 e − β ( p r + p i ) + e β ( n − q r − q i ) − β ( p r + p i ) + e − β ( n − q r − q i ) − β ( p r + p i ) + 2 e β ( p r + p i ) + 2 e β ( n − q r + β ( p r − p i ) + 2 e β ( n − q i + β ( p i − p r ) + 2 e − β ( n − q i + β ( p i − p r ) + 2 e − β ( n − q r + β ( p r − p i ) . (10)Finally we have: q r ≡ (cid:60) [ q ; n, β ] = (cid:60) [ f ( q, p ; n, β )] g ( q, p ; n, β ) q i ≡ (cid:61) [ q ; n, β ] = (cid:61) [ f ( q, p ; n, β )] g ( q, p ; n, β ) . (11) As we expected the quantity q, named mean of two-stars - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FIG. 1: Graphical representation of simultaneous solutions ofeq.(11) in a complete graph with N = 64 nodes for differenttemperature in ( q r , q i ) plane. Above critical temperature( T > T c ) we just have one trivial solution. Far below criticaltemperature ( T (cid:28) T c ) we have seven solutions. As we can see thenumber of solutions vary with temperature. (having one node in common), has real and imaginaryparts. We should solve these two above self-consistentequations simultaneously to find q r and q i .Lets give more details to highlight the importance of thisquantity: Mean of two-stars plays a key role in describ-ing the state of the system. When temperature is highenough( T (cid:29) T c ) the stochastic behavior of the systemovershadows the Competitive Balance Dynamics and thesystem does not reach the state of balance, so it remainsin a random configuration and the mean of two-stars ,( q ),gives zero value. On the other hand when temperatureis low enough ( T (cid:28) T c ) the stochastic behavior (ther-mal fluctuations) of the system is not as much as to beable to impact the dynamics of competitive balance. Sowe expect the system could reach the state of balance.Therefore, depending on weather the system is in par-adise of real or imaginary link q is approximately +1 and − q is a good measure for describing thestate of the system.Fig. 1 represents the simultaneous solutions of (11)which are computed numerically in allowed ranges − 1. As it is shownin Fig. 1(d) for T > T c we just have one solution,( q ∗ r , q ∗ i ) = (0 , T ≈ T c = 22 . T (cid:28) T c (Fig. 1.(a),(b)) there are 7intersections. As we know from phenomenology of phasetransitions having nonzero solutions at T = T c (Fig.1.c)is a key feature of a first order phase transition. For dis-cussing the stability of solutions in different temperatureswe take a two-dimensional field with two components onthe basis of our self consistent equations in ( q r , q i ) plane which are defined as bellow: (cid:40) u q r = f ( q r , q i ; β, N ) − q r v q i = g ( q r , q i ; β, N ) − q i . Fig. 2 depicts the above two-dimensional vector fieldwith (11)’s solutions for different temperatures. As it isillustrated for T (cid:28) T c we have 7 fix-points(Fig.2.a andFig.2.b) which blue ones are stable(attractive) and redones are unstable(repulsive). As temperature increasesgradually all those unstable fixed-points which were veryclose to zero stable fix-point gently get away from it andgo towards those stable fix-points which are in their vicin-ity. At T = 18 . q i axis are about to annihilateeach other and disappear. At last very close to T c at T = 22 . q r , q i ) plane are about to eliminate each other.from this point on we just have a single attractive fix-point which is the trivial solution of our self consistentequation (Fig. 2.f). IV. SIMULATION AND COMPARISON WITHMEAN-FIELD SOLUTION At first step we adopt a fully connected network with N = 64 nodes and take three different initial conditions:(i) all edges are +1 which correspond to the paradise ofreal interest or paradigm, (ii) all edges are − i which cor-respond to the paradise of the second paradigm and (iii)a quiet random initial condition. In the first two initialstates all triangles are balanced and in the third one alledges are chosen completely random , so the total num-ber of balanced and unbalanced triangles are equal. Thesystem then is evolved through the Monte Carlo methodand Metropolis wieght for a given temperature T as fol-lows: • In each update step we choose an edge randomlyand flip it to the one of three other kinds with equalprobability. • The flip will be accepted if the total energy of thesystem is reduced, otherwise it will be acceptedwith probability e − ∆ E/kT , In which ∆ E = E f − E i is the energy difference between final and initialstates. • We repeat these two above steps until the systemreach the stationary state.The value of energy over temperature has been de-picted in Fig. 3.a where it has been compared with theanalytic Mean-Field solution. As it can be seen the re-sult of simulation is in good agreement with analytic so-lution. Mean field solution has unstable answers whichapparently have no counterpart in simulations. - - - - (a) - - - - (b) - - - - (c) - - - - (d) - - - - (e) - - - - (f) FIG. 2: Illustration of stable(blue dots) and unstable(red dots)fixed points for six different temperatures in a complete graphwith N = 64 nodes. Far below critical temperature those unstablefix-points which are close to zero stable fix-point gradually getaway from the origin and as we get closer to critical temperaturethose unstable and stable fix-points which are gathered in oneplace annihilate each other. after critical point( T C ≈ . 8) we justhave one stable fix point which represents random configuration If we start from a completely balance initial condition(all +1 and all − i ) and increase temperature we observea discrete phase transition at ( T c ≈ 21) which is slightlydifferent from the mean-field prediction ( T c ≈ q r has been measured in simulation and the result has beendepicted in Fig. 3.b. We again observe a good agreementbetween simulation and analytic solution.Fig. 4.a and b represent the linear dependency of crit-ical temperature on size of the network in Monte-Carlosimulation and mean-field solution with slope one. mean-field solution of competitive balancetheory(solid curves)for different temperature . As it is obviousthere is a good agreement between two methods. ature for phase transition for different sizes of networks. V. CONCLUSION It is an engrossing idea to explore the evolution of aheterogeneous signed network holding different conceptu-alizations of friendship and enmity. Taking this hetero-geneity into account along with the tendency towards thestate of balance, steaming from the Structural BalanceTheory, leads to the formation of conflict of interests;which is an inseparable part of real social networks.We have theoretically examined the idea of conflict-ing interests within the framework of Competitive Bal-ance Theory in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Ouranalytic solution shows that the system observes a dis-crete transition over-temperature where symmetry be-tween paradigms break and only one paradigm dominatesthe system.We have shown that the average of the pairwise edgesor correlations between edges is the suitable order pa-rameters, exposing a first-order phase transition belowwhich the symmetry between two kinds of balance is bro-ken. Simulations are in good agreement with analyticalsolutions.
