The strong chromatic number, χ S ( G ), of an n -vertex graph G is the smallest number k suchthat after adding k ⌈ n/k ⌉ − n isolated vertices to G and considering any partition of the verticesof the resulting graph into disjoint subsets V , . . . , V ⌈ n/k ⌉ of size k each, one can find a proper k -vertex-coloring of the graph such that each part V i , i = 1 , . . . , ⌈ n/k ⌉ , contains exactly onevertex of each color.For any graph G with maximum degree ∆, it is easy to see that χ S ( G ) ≥ ∆ + 1. Recently,Haxell proved that χ S ( G ) ≤ −
1. In this paper, we improve this bound for graphs with largemaximum degree. We show that χ S ( G ) ≤
2∆ if ∆ ≥ n/ An n -vertex graph G is strongly r -colorable if after adding r ⌈ n/r ⌉ − n isolated vertices to G andconsidering any partition of the vertices of the resulting graph into disjoint subsets V , . . . , V ⌈ n/r ⌉ of size r each, one can find a proper r -vertex-coloring of the graph such that each part V i , i =1 , . . . , ⌈ n/r ⌉ , contains exactly one vertex of each color. In [5], it was shown that if a graph G isstrongly r -colorable, then it is strongly ( r + 1)-colorable.The strong chromatic number of G , denoted χ S ( G ), is the smallest positive integer k suchthat G is strongly k -colorable.The famous “cycle plus triangles” problem of Erd˝os [4], asking whether χ S ( C m ) = 3, wasanswered affirmatively by Fleischner and Stiebitz [7], [8], see also [15]. In general, Alon [1] provedthat for any graph G with maximum degree ∆, χ S ( G ) ≤ c ∆, where c is a very large constant (asthe author remarks, c could be reduced to 10 ). Recently, Haxell [12] improved the bound by Alondrastically, proving that χ S ( G ) ≤ − G with maximum degree ∆.As far as the lower bound is concerned, it is easy to see that the strong chromatic number of agraph with maximum degree ∆ is at least ∆ + 1 by taking one of the V i ’s to be the neighborhoodof a vertex of maximum degree.Let f (∆ , n ) = max { χ S ( G ) : G has maximum degree ∆ and order n } . Therefore, the best known general bounds are:∆ + 1 ≤ f (∆ , n ) ≤ − , ∗ Department of Mathematics, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011, [email protected] † Department of Mathematics, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011, [email protected] . Theorem 1.1
Let G be a graph on n vertices with maximum degree ∆ , ∆ ≥ n/ . Then χ S ( G ) ≤ . Moreover, for any positive integers ∆ and n , such that ∆ ≤ n/ there is a graph G on n vertices, maximum degree ∆ and χ S ( G ) ≥ . Corollary 1.2
For any positive integer ∆ and any n such that n/ ≤ ∆ ≤ n/ , f (∆ , n ) = 2∆ .Moreover, f (∆ , n ) ≥ when ∆ ≤ n/ . In [7], [8] and others, it was noted that for specific values of n depending on ∆, there is a graph G such that χ S ( G ) ≥ n . Let ∆ ≤ n/
2, let G be a graph formed by a disjoint union of a completebipartite graph K ∆ , ∆ and n −
2∆ isolated vertices. Assume that χ S ( G ) ≤ −
1, that is, for r = 2∆ −
1, any partition of V ( G ) and r ⌈ n/r ⌉ − n isolated vertices into t = ⌈ n/r ⌉ sets of equalsizes, V , . . . , V t , allows a proper r -coloring of the resulting graph such that each V i uses all thecolors. Note that t ≥ ⌈ / (2∆ − ⌉ = 2. Now, let A, B be the partite sets of a complete bipartitesubgraph of G with | A | = | B | = ∆, let A ⊆ V and B ⊆ V . Then it is easy to see that it isimpossible to find the desired r -coloring.Together with the upper bound which we prove below, we shall have that χ S ( G ) = 2∆ when n/ ≤ ∆ ≤ n/ G be a graph on n vertices with maximum degree ∆ ≥ n/ ≥ n/
2. Then 2∆ ≥ n and we trivially have that χ S ( G ) ≤ n ≤ n/ ≤ ∆ < n/
2. Thus, n/ ≤ < n and we have to partition V ( G ) and needed isolatedvertices arbitrarily into two sets V and V , | V | = | V | . Each vertex in V is nonadjacent to at least | V | / V and vice versa. Consider the bipartite complement G ′ of this graph. That is,the edge set of G ′ consists of all pairs { v , v } , v ∈ V and v ∈ V such that { v , v } / ∈ E ( G ). Weclaim that for each S ⊆ V , | N ( S ) | ≥ | S | . Indeed, assume that there is a set S ′ ⊆ V for which | N ( S ′ ) | < | S ′ | . We have then that | S ′ | > | V | /
2, thus, for any vertex v ∈ V \ N ( S ′ ), v is adjacentto at most | V | − | S ′ | < | V | / G ′ gives a perfect matching, which provides a proper coloring of the original graph, G , with 2∆ colors,each represented exactly once in V and exactly once in V .Let n/ ≤ ∆ < n/
4. As before, in order to verify that χ S ( G ) ≤ r = 2∆, we need to add r ⌈ n/r ⌉− n isolated vertices to G and partition the resulting vertex set arbitrarily into parts V , V , V of equal sizes. We shall be treating this case by analyzing and extending partial colorings.A partial strong coloring of G with respect to V , V , V is a proper coloring of a subset of thevertices of G such that no two colored vertices in the same part V i , i = 1 , , S of vertices and a vertex coloring χ , wesay that S is partially multicolored by χ if any two vertices in S , which are colored by χ , havedistinct colors. Let χ be a maximal partial strong coloring of G with respect to V , V , V . We will2how that we can always enlarge such partial strong coloring; i.e., create another partial strongcoloring with more colors, until we color all the vertices. For a color c , we denote the vertices ofthis color { c , c , c } , where c i ∈ V i for i = 1 , ,
3. We fix v ∈ V , v ∈ V , v ∈ V such that noneof v , v , v are colored by χ . For i = 1 , ,
3, define the following set: X i def = { u ∈ V i : v i is not adjacent to a vertex of color χ ( u ) } ∪ { u ∈ V i : u is not colored by χ } . Observe that any colored vertex in X i can be replaced by v i , i = 1 , , | X i | ≥ | V i | − deg( v i ) + t i ≥ ∆ , i = 1 , , , where t i is the number of neighbors of v i in { v , v , v } .To simplify the notation, we shall assume that no color of χ is labelled by x, v , or w , we reserve x i or w i to denote a vertex in X i (it might be colored or not colored), and v i are the vertices fixedabove. We shall write z ∼ y , z y if zy ∈ E ( G ), zy / ∈ E ( G ), respectively. For disjoint subsets S , S of vertices of G and a vertex z , z / ∈ S , we write S ∼ S if each vertex in S is adjacent to allvertices in S , S S if there are no edges between S and S , and z ∼ S , z S if { z } ∼ S , { z } 6∼ S , respectively.To start the proof, we give two lemmas which allow us either to enlarge χ or to replace χ withanother partial strong coloring such that some three specific vertices become uncolored and thenumber of colors remains the same. Lemma 2.1
Let x i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , . If { x , x , x } is partially multicolored then there is a strongpartial coloring with as many color classes as χ and with x i ’s being uncolored. Proof.
Suppose each x i , i = 1 , , x = a , x = b , x = c with distinct colors a, b, c . Figure 1: Color switches for Lemma 2.1Now, suppose exactly one x i is uncolored, without loss of generality, x = a , x = b and x is uncolored. Replace color classes a and b with new color classes { v , a , a } , { b , v , b } . Supposeexactly one x i is colored, without loss of generality, x = a and x , x are uncolored. Replace colorclass a with the new color class { v , a , a } . Each case makes { x , x , x } uncolored. (cid:4) Lemma 2.2 (1). If there is a set { x , x , x } , with x i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , , which induces an independent set andis partially multicolored then χ can be enlarged. { x i , x ′ i , x j , x k } , with x i , x ′ i ∈ X i , x j ∈ X j , x k ∈ X k , { i, j, k } = { , , } suchthat { x j , x k } is partially multicolored, and both { x i , x j , x k } and { x ′ i , x j , x k } induce independentsets, then χ can be enlarged.(3). Let a set { x , x , x } , with x i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , , induce an independent set and the set { v , v , v } induce neither an independent set nor a clique. Then either χ can be enlargedor one can find another partial strong coloring with as many color classes as in χ and withthree uncolored vertices x ′ i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , that induce a K . Proof. (1) : By Lemma 2.1 there is a partial strong coloring with as many color classes as in χ andsuch that x , x , x are uncolored. We can give these vertices a new color thus enlarging the coloring. (2) : If either { x i , x j , x k } or { x ′ i , x j , x k } is partially multicolored then we can use (1), otherwiseassume, without loss of generality, that i = 1 , j = 2 , k = 3 and x = a , x ′ = b , x = b , x = a , for distinct colors a, b . Consider the following sets of vertices: { v , b , a } , { b , v , b } and { a , a , v } . They are independent because of the definition of X i ’s, i = 1 , ,
3. We can colorvertices in each of these sets with the same new color, which replaces color classes a , b and saturatesvertices { v , v , v } , thus enlarging χ . (3) : We can assume, without loss of generality, that v ∼ v and v v . Case 1. χ ( x ) = χ ( x ) = χ ( x ) = a. Replace the color class a with two new color classes: { x , v , v } and { v , x , x } , thus enlarging χ . Case 2. χ ( x ) = χ ( x ) = a . If x is not colored by χ , replace color class a with two newcolor classes: { a , v , v } and { x , x , x } . If x is colored b , replace color classes a and b with thefollowing three new color classes: { a , v , v } , { v , b , b } , { x , x , x } . This enlarges χ . Case 3. χ ( x ) = χ ( x ) = a . If x ∼ { v , v } then replace x with v in its color class if x is colored by χ . Then v , v , x are three uncolored vertices inducing a clique. Let { x ′ , x ′ , x ′ } = { v , v , x } . If x v then replace x by v in its color class (if x is colored) and replace acolor class a with two new color classes: { v , x , x } , { x , v , a } , thus enlarging χ . If x v then replace x by v in its color class, replace x by v in its color class (if x is colored), andgive a new color to the independent set { x , v , x } , thus enlarging χ . Note that the case when χ ( x ) = χ ( x ) = a is symmetric. Case 4. { x , x , x } is partially multicolored. This is part (1) of this Lemma. (cid:4) Next, we consider three cases depending on how many edges the set { v , v , v } induces in G .We shall greedily choose appropriate x i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , { v , v , v } induces three edges. In this case, the coloring can be enlarged. InCase 2, { v , v , v } induces two edges, without loss of generality v v , and either the coloringcan be enlarged or another coloring with the same number of colors can be found so that there arethree pairwise adjacent uncolored vertices reducing the analysis to Case 1. Finally, in Case 3 there4s only one edge, without loss of generality v v , induced by { v , v , v } . In this case, either thecoloring can be enlarged or we can find a coloring that puts us in Case 2 or Case 1. See Figure 2. Figure 2: Cases 1, 2, 3In Cases 1 and 2 we shall need the following parameter: q def = max {| N ( x ) ∩ X j | : x ∈ X i ; i = j with i, j ∈ { , , }} . Case 1: v ∼ v , v ∼ v and v ∼ v We have | X i | ≥ | V i | − (deg( v i ) − ≥ ∆ + 2, for i = 1 , ,
3. Without loss of generality, assumethat q = | N ( x ) ∩ X | , for x ∈ X . Let x ∈ X \ N ( x ), be a vertex not of color χ ( x ). Consider S = X \ ( N ( x ) ∪ N ( x )). By the choice of x , | S | ≥ | X | − (∆ − q ) − q ≥ (∆ + 2) − ∆ = 2, thusthere are two vertices x , x ′ ∈ X nonadjacent to both x and x . Therefore, Lemma 2.2 (2) canbe applied to the four vertices x , x , x , x ′ to enlarge the coloring. Case 2: v ∼ v , v ∼ v and v v In this case, | X | ≥ ∆ + 2 and | X | , | X | ≥ ∆ + 1. Let q = | N ( x i ) ∩ X j | , x i ∈ X i and let k ∈ { , , } \ { i, j } . Let x j ∈ X j \ N ( x i ), let x k ∈ X k \ ( N ( x i ) ∪ N ( x j )) . Note that such x j and x k exist since | X j | ≥ ∆ + 1 and | X k \ ( N ( x i ) ∪ N ( x j )) | ≥ ∆ + 1 − q − (∆ − q ) ≥ { x i , x j , x k } . This either enlarges χ or reduces Case 2 to Case 1. Case 3: v ∼ v , v v and v v We show that in each of the Cases 3.1–3.3 one can enlarge the coloring, either directly or byfinding a coloring with the same number of colors that satisfies either the conditions of Case 2 orthe conditions of Case 1. These subcases are arranged according to the presence of specific pathsin X ∪ X ∪ X , see Figure 3. Case 3.1.
There is no path with three vertices w , w , w ; w i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , | X | , | X | ≥ ∆ + 1 and | X | ≥ ∆. Let G i,j be the bipartite subgraph of G inducedby the edges of G between X i and X j , with i = j and i, j ∈ { , , } . Note that G i,j = G j,i . More-over, the distinct graphs G i,j are pairwise vertex-disjoint. If one of G i,j has a nonedge x i x j , thenfor any x k ∈ X k , k ∈ { , , } \ { x i , x j } , { x , x , x } is an independent set. Case 3.2VVV vvv
VVV vvv aa VVV vvv
Figure 3: Subcases of Case 3that each G i,j is a complete bipartite graph. It is easy to see that in this case there is also anindependent set { x , x , x } , x i ∈ X i , i = 1 , ,
3. Now, we can apply Lemma 2.2 (3) to { x , x , x } and either enlarge the coloring or reduce the analysis to Case 1. Case 3.2.
There is a path P with three vertices w , w , w ; w i ∈ X i , i = 1 , , P are partially multicolored or the middle vertex of P is in X ∪ X .If P is partially multicolored, we can apply Lemma 2.1 immediately to obtain a partial strongcoloring with as many colors as χ and with vertices of P being uncolored. We can now choose v i = w i , i = 1 , , P has repeated colors on its vertices, these can be only endvertices of P . Without loss ofgenerality, let the midpoint of P be w ∈ X , let a = w , a = w be the endpoints of P . If w is not colored, replace color class a with an independent set { a , v , v } . If w has color b , then,in addition, replace the color class b with an independent set { v , b , b } . This uncolors w , w , w and brings us to Case 2. Case 3.3.
There is a path ( w , w , w ); with w i ∈ X i , for i = 1 , ,
3, and w , w of the same color.Moreover, there are no paths satisfying the conditions of Case 3.2.Note that there is no independent set { x , x , x } , x i ∈ X i , otherwise we can either enlarge thecoloring or reduce the analysis to Case 1 by Lemma 2.2 (3). Note also that if x ∼ x , x i ∈ X i , i = 1 ,
2, then { x , x } 6∼ X , otherwise it is Case 3.2. Therefore, we have that the bipartite subgraphof G with parts X , X induces one nontrivial connected component F which must be a completebipartite graph. Since v i ∈ X i , i = 1 , ,
3, and v ∼ v , v , v ∈ V ( F ). Let B ⊆ X , B ⊆ X ,be the partite sets of F . Let A i = X i \ B i , i = 1 ,
2. Then we have that B ∼ B , A ∪ A ∼ X , A A . Then, in particular, we have that a i ∈ A i , i = 1 ,
2, and | A | = | A | = 1, otherwise weshall find a path satisfying Case 3.2. Since | X | , | X | ≥ ∆ + 1, we have that | B | = | B | = ∆.Therefore, we can conclude that | X | = | X | = ∆ + 1 and | X | = ∆. Claim.
The vertices v , v , v are the only uncolored vertices and every color class other than a hasexactly one member in X ∪ X . Proof of Claim
Let b be a color used by χ , b = a , not present on vertices of X . N ( v ) = B , so v b and v b . This implies that b ∈ X . Thus, any color b , b = a , is used on some vertex in X ∪ X .Let t be the number of uncolored vertices in each V i , i = 1 , ,
3; i.e., the number of6olor classes in χ is 2∆ − t . The fact that each color class other than a contains atleast one member of X ∪ X and a contains two such members gives that | X | + | X | ≥ (2∆ − t + 1) + 2 t . Here, the expression in parenthesis gives the lower bound on numberof colored vertices in X and X and 2 t is the number of uncolored vertices in X and X . Because | X | + | X | = 2∆ + 2, we have that t = 1. As a result, every vertex otherthan v , v , v is colored and every color class other than a contains exactly one vertexfrom X ∪ X .By Claim, there are 2∆ − a in χ . Let ν be the number of neighbors of v colored differently than a . Since v ∼ { a , a } , we have that deg( v ) ≥ ν + 2. For a color c , c = a ,the conditions v c and v c imply that c ∈ X . Using also the fact that v ∈ X , we havethat | X | ≥ (2∆ − − ν ) + 1 . Since | X | = ∆, we have that (2∆ − − ν ) + 1 ≤ ∆, thus ν ≥ ∆ − v ) ≥ ν + 2 ≥ ∆ + 1, a contradiction.This concludes Case 3.3, and the proof of Theorem 1.1. (cid:4) It should be noted that Theorem 1.1 is equivalent to the following:
Corollary 3.1
Let G be a tripartite graph with parts of size n each. If the minimum degree of G is at least n/ then G has a K -factor. This result provides another sufficient condition for the existence of K -factors. For other resultsin this area, see for example, [3, 11, 2, 6, 13, 14, 9]. It also came to author’s attention after themanuscript has been submitted that this problem has been considered independently in [10], bytreating r -factors in multipartite graphs under maximum degree conditions. The authors are indebted to anonymous referees for their careful work. They are especially thankfulfor a referee, who provided Lemma 2.2 (3), which helped shortening the proofs.
