The single-top production is an important process at the LHC to test the Standard Model (SM)and search for the new physics beyond the SM. Although the complete next-to-next-to-leading order(NNLO) QCD correction to the single-top production is crucial, this calculation is still challengingat present. In order to efficiently reduce the NNLO single-top amplitude, we improve the auxiliarymass flow (AMF) method by introducing the (cid:15) truncation. For demonstration we choose one typicalplanar double-box diagram for the tW production. It is shown that one coefficient of the formfactors on its amplitude can be systematically reduced into the linear combination of 198 scalarintegrals. I. INTRODUCTION
The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle in theStandard Model (SM). In 1994, the discovery of the topquark at the Tevatron [1, 2] meant the third generation offermions in the SM is complete. Meanwhile the top quarkis the only flavor that can decay before hadronization. This unique property provides an opportunity to directlymeasure the properties of the top quark. According tothe fermion mass law [3], the top quark mass is relatedto the Yukawa strength between the top quark and theHiggs boson field. After the discovery of Higgs boson atthe Large Hadron Collider (LHC), this coupling can bedirectly studied by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations[4–6]. Therefore, the top quark also plays an importantrole in the study on the electroweak symmetry breaking(EWSB).At the hadron colliders, the dominant contributionto the top quark production is the top-pair produc-tion via the strong interaction, such as q ¯ q → t ¯ t and gg → t ¯ t . This process was discovered two decades ago[1, 2]. Then the next largest contribution to the topquark production is the single-top production via theelectroweak interaction, which was observed in 2009 atthe Tevatron [7, 8] for the first time. Compared to thetop-pair production, the W tb vertex is included in thesingle-top production, and can be directly used to mea-sure the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa(CKM) matrix el-ement | V tb | without assuming unitarity [9, 10] and theextraction of the top quark mass [11, 12]. On the otherhand, the single-top production can be a sensitive probeto search for the new physics beyond the SM (BSM). Forinstance, the single-top production could be sensitive tothe new heavy gauge boson W (cid:48) [13–15], the new fermions[16–18] or the new scalars [19, 20]. And it has beenfound that the single-top production provides a comfort- ∗ [email protected] † [email protected] ‡ [email protected] able agreement with 2HDM+ α model [21–24] to searchfor the Dark matter (DM).At the LHC, there are three major modes for the single-top production : s -channel, t -channel and the tW pro-duction channel. The first two channels have been ob-served at the Tevatron [7, 8]. And only recently the thirdchannel, tW production channel, was observed at theLHC [25]. Beside the progress of experiments, the precisetheoretical predictions are demanded to match the highaccuracy of experiment measurements. And the precisetheoretical predictions can play vital roles in extractingimportant information from the experiment data. For allabove three channels, the next-to-leading order (NLO)QCD corrections have been investigated [26–37]. For thenext-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections, manyapproximate results based on soft gluon resummationhave been obtained [38–46]. The NNLO QCD correc-tion to t -channel under structure function approximationhave been calculated in [47]. Also the NNLO calcula-tions including top-quark leptonic decay under structurefunction approximation and narrow width approximationhave developed in recent years [48–50]. And the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N LO) soft-gluon correc-tions for the tW production has been studied [51].In the calculation of the multi-loop Feynman diagrams, the amplitude generally needs to be reduced into linearcombination of the master integrals, which can be furtherevaluated analytically or numerically. The first key stepof amplitude reduction is the tensor reduction, which isused to separate the loop momenta from fermion chainsor polarization vectors. The conventional approaches tothe tensor reduction include the projection method [52–54] and the Tarasov’s method [55]. However, in somemulti-scale processes, these approaches can be too com-plicated due to the difficulty of the inverse matrix orthe dimension shift. Beside the conventional approaches, computational algebraic based algorithms [56–58] andnumerical unitarity method [59–63] also have been devel-oped in the last decade. Then after the tensor reduction, the integration by part (IBP) identities are usually im-plemented to reduce the scalar integrals into master the a r X i v : . [ h e p - ph ] F e b integrals. In the past decade, many algorithms and codeshave been developed for the IBP reduction [64–83].Recently the auxiliary mass flow (AMF) method hasbeen proposed to reduce the amplitude and the scalar in-tegrals [84–86]. Also it can be used to numerically evalu-ate the master integrals and the phase space [87, 88]. Inamplitude reduction, this method can avoid complicatedcalculations of the inverse matrix and the dimension shiftwhile the master integrals could be chosen freely. In this paper, we introduce the truncation on (cid:15) to im-prove the efficiency of the matching procedure in theAMF method. With the help of this improvement, wecan reduce one planar double-box diagram for the single-top production. Due to the complexity of multiloop mul-tiscale diagram, we choose the integrals that include ir-reducible numerators to construct the set of scalar inte-grals. And in order to control the length of the reductioncoefficients, we keep the reduction coefficients up to (cid:15) ,which is sufficient for the NNLO corrections. In the nextsection the main algorithm will be explained in detail. Then the reduction results will be shown. Finally theconclusion is made. II. AMPLITUDE REDUCTION VIAAUXILIARY MASS FLOW
In general the loop amplitude can be written as M = (cid:90) D L q N ( { q j } Lj =1 , { k e } Ee =1 ) (cid:81) ni =1 D ν i i , (1)where D L q ≡ (cid:81) L(cid:96) =1 d D q (cid:96) . { k e } Ee =1 are E external mo-menta and { q j } Lj =1 are L loop momenta. {D i } ni =1 are thedenominators of propagators. N ( { q j } Lj =1 , { k e } Ee =1 ) is thenumerator that may contain fermion chains or polariza-tion vectors. In the AMF method, all the denominatorsare modified as [85],1 D i ≡ P i − m i → (cid:101) D i ≡ P i − m i + ıη , (2)where ıη is the auxiliary mass, P i ≡ Q i + K i is the mo-mentum of the i -th propagator. Q i and K i are the linearcombinations of respective loop momenta and externalmomenta. Then we obtain the modified loop amplitude (cid:102) M ( η ) = (cid:88) µ ...µ R (cid:96) ...(cid:96) R N µ ...µ R ,(cid:96) ...(cid:96) R ( { k e } Ee =1 ) (cid:101) G µ ...µ R (cid:96) ...(cid:96) R , (3)where (cid:101) G µ ...µ R (cid:96) ...(cid:96) R ≡ (cid:90) D L q q µ (cid:96) . . . q µ R (cid:96) R (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i (4)is the modifiled tensor integral. And N µ ...µ R ,(cid:96) ...(cid:96) R is therelevant coefficient. At the two-loop level we can define the modified amplitude explicitly (cid:102) M uv ( η ) ≡ (cid:88) µ ...µ u + v N µ ...µ u + v , , ··· , (cid:124) (cid:123)(cid:122) (cid:125) u , , ··· , (cid:124) (cid:123)(cid:122) (cid:125) v ( { k e } Ee =1 ) × (cid:101) G µ ...µ u + v , ··· , (cid:124) (cid:123)(cid:122) (cid:125) u , , ··· , (cid:124) (cid:123)(cid:122) (cid:125) v , (5)which only include one type of the tensor integrals. Thenthe two-loop modified amplitude can be written as (cid:102) M ( η ) = (cid:88) u,v (cid:102) M uv ( η ) . (6)After the Feynman parameterization [89], by using Tay-lor series for η → ∞ [85] we can obtain the series repre-sentation of (cid:102) M uv ( η ), (cid:102) M uv ( η ) = (cid:88) i C iuv F i , (7)where C iuv = η dim( C iuv ) / (cid:32) p (cid:88) p =0 (cid:88) j (cid:88) α ,...,α t | α | = p (cid:16) a pαj ( D ) η − p × s α I ( vac ) ,D ,j (cid:17) + O ( η − p − ) (cid:33) . (8)Here F i is the form factor and C iuv is the relevant co-efficient. I ( vac ) ,D ,j represents the j -th 2-loop vacuumbubble master integral. s ≡ ( s , . . . , s t ) is the tupleof linear independent kinematic variables { s , . . . , s t } . s α ≡ s α · · · s α t t is the monomial, where α = ( α , . . . , α t )is a t -tuple of nonnegative integers. And a pαj is the co-efficient that depends only on the space-time dimension D . The explicit definitions of symbols in Eq. (8) can befound in Ref. [85].After obtaining the series representation of C iuv , wecan choose a set of integrals for the reduction. The AMFmethod allows one to choose integrals freely. Thus incomplex multiscale process we choose the integrals thatinclude irreducible numerators to construct the set ofscalar integrals. Here we define two-loop modified scalarintegral (cid:101) I ≡ (cid:90) D q (cid:16) (cid:81) Ee =1 (cid:81) i =1 ( k e · q i ) ρ ei (cid:17) (cid:16)(cid:81) l =1 (cid:81) lj =1 ( q j · q l ) σ jl (cid:17)(cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (9)where the exponents ρ ei and σ jl are nonnegative integers.And we can define a tuple β = ( β , β ), where β ≡ E (cid:88) e =1 ρ e, + σ , + 2 σ , (10)and β ≡ E (cid:88) e =1 ρ e, + σ , + 2 σ , . (11)In order to reduce (cid:102) M uv ( η ), the set of scalar integrals canbe chosen as (cid:110)(cid:101) I (cid:111) β =( u,v ) . (12)Hence the set of scalar integrals has the same loop mo-menta rank and denominator powers with (cid:102) M uv ( η ). Weuse (cid:101) I uvk to denote the k -th integrals in { (cid:101) I } β =( u,v ) . Forinstance, since the number of independent external mo-menta is 3, the reduction of (cid:102) M , ( η ) needs 7 modifiedscalar integrals, (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( q · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( k · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( k · q )( k · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( k · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( k · q )( k · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( k · q )( k · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i , (cid:101) I , , ( η ) ≡ (cid:90) D q ( k · q ) (cid:81) ni =1 [( Q i + K i ) − m i + ıη ] ν i . (13)Then by using Taylor series for η → ∞ we can obtain theseries representation of (cid:101) I uvk ( η ), (cid:101) I uvk = η dim( (cid:101) I uvk ) / (cid:32) p (cid:88) p =0 (cid:88) j (cid:88) α ,...,α t | α | = p (cid:16) a kpαj ( D ) × η − p s α I ( vac ) ,D ,j (cid:17) + O ( η − p − ) (cid:33) . (14)Analogue to the procedure in [85], by matching theform factor coefficient C iuv and the set of scalar integrals { (cid:101) I uvk } in the series representation, one can generate thecoefficient matrix M ( D ). Finally the reduction problemcan be transformed into the null space problem of M ( D ), M ( D ) · X ( D ) = 0 , (15)where the coefficient matrix M ( D ) and the null space X ( D ) only depend on D . For the NNLO correction, thecoefficient matrix usually can be large and complicated.Consequently the null space could be difficult to obtain, and the reduction coefficients can be very long.To efficiently solve the null space and control the lengthof reduction coefficients in the dimension regularization,first we expand the coefficient matrix M ( (cid:15) ) at (cid:15) → M ( (cid:15) ) = M + M (cid:15) + · · · + M m (cid:15) m + O ( (cid:15) m +1 ) , (16)where M , · · · , M n are constant matrices. Similarly theunknown null space X ( (cid:15) ) can also be expanded as X ( (cid:15) ) = X + X (cid:15) + · · · + X m (cid:15) m + O ( (cid:15) m +1 ) . (17)Then by substituting Eq. (16) and Eq. (17) into Eq.(15) we can obtain a linear system of equations M · X = 0 , M · X + M · X = 0 , M · X + M · X + M · X = 0 , · · · M · X m + M · X m − + · · · + M m · X = 0 . (18)Starting from the (cid:15) order, we assume that the equation M · X = 0 (19)have r solutions. Then we have M · X ( r )0 = 0 , (20)where X ( r )0 ≡ ( X , X , · · · , X r ) . (21)Since the linear combinations of { X , X , · · · , X r } arealso the solutions of Eq. (20), the null space equation at (cid:15) order becomes (cid:16) M · X ( r )0 , M (cid:17) (cid:32) C ( r ,r )0 X ( r )1 (cid:33) = 0 , (22)where X ( r )1 ≡ ( X , X , · · · , X r ) (23)are r solutions, and C ( r ,r )0 is r × r constant matrix.Now up to (cid:15) , the solutions can be expressed as X ( r )0 + X ( r )1 (cid:15), (24)where X ( r )0 ≡ X ( r )0 · C ( r ,r )0 .Suppose that up to (cid:15) p we have the solutions X ( r p )0 + X ( r p )1 (cid:15) + · · · + X ( r p ) p (cid:15) p . (25)Then at (cid:15) p +1 we can have (cid:16) M p +1 · X ( r p )0 + · · · + M · X ( r p ) p , M (cid:17) · (cid:32) C ( r p ,r p +1 ) p X ( r p +1 ) p +1 (cid:33) = 0 . (26)Then up to the next order (cid:15) p +1 we can obtain the solu-tion, X ( r p +1 )0 + X ( r p +1 )1 (cid:15) + · · · + X ( r p +1 ) p +1 (cid:15) p +1 , (27)where X ( r p +1 )0 ≡ X ( r p )0 · C ( r p ,r p +1 ) p , · · · X ( r p +1) p ≡ X ( r p ) p · C ( r p ,r p +1 ) p . (28)Therefore, by the iteration relations we can obtain theapproximate soulutions X approx ( (cid:15) ), X approx ( (cid:15) ) = X ( r m )0 + X ( r m )1 (cid:15) + · · · + X ( r m ) m (cid:15) m . (29)Since we take the truncation on (cid:15) in M ( (cid:15) ) and X ( (cid:15) ),the equations in Eq. (18) are the parts of the completelinear system of equations in Eq. (15). Meanthile the ap-proximation of the ture solutions X ( (cid:15) ) must exist within X approx ( (cid:15) ). And there could be some redundant solutionsthat satisfy Eq. (18) but not satisfy Eq. (15). To checkif there are redundant solutions in X approx ( (cid:15) ), we can ob-serve the number of the linear independent solutions in X approx ( (cid:15) ). If it is equal to the nullity of M ( (cid:15) ), which canbe obtained by randomly assigning (cid:15) as some constantnumbers, it means that there is no redundant solution.Therefore, the X approx ( (cid:15) ) is the approximation of the X , X approx ( (cid:15) ) = X ( (cid:15) ) | (cid:15) m +1 =0 . (30)Also the finite fields are implemented to improve the ef-ficiency in null space calculations of the constant matri-ces. And the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) is usedto reconstruct the rational numbers. Finally we keepthe reduction coefficients up to (cid:15) since at the two-looplevel the maximum divergence of integrals is (cid:15) − . Conse-quently the null space problem can be efficiently solved.And the length of reduction coefficients can be effectivelycontrolled.After the reduction, (cid:102) M uv ( η ) can be reduced to severalscalar integrals (cid:102) M uv ( η ) = (cid:88) i (cid:88) k C iuvk (cid:101) I uvk ( η ) F i , (31)where C iuvk is the reduction coefficient of relevant (cid:101) I uvk ( η ) and F i for (cid:102) M uv ( η ). Since the set of scalar in-tegrals { (cid:101) I } β =( u,v ) and (cid:102) M uv ( η ) has same denominatorpowers and loop momenta rank, the reduction coefficients { C iuvk } only depend on the numerator of amplitude andscalar integrals. Consequently, the reduction coefficients { C iuvk } are independent of η .For given form factor F i of amplitude, the set { (cid:101) I uvk } and { C iuvk } can be ordered using certain well order re-lation, e.g. lexicographical ordering, for ( u, v, k ), respec-tively. And (cid:101) I p and C ip can be denoted as the p -th elementin the corresponding set. Finally the modified amplitudecan be written as (cid:102) M ( η ) = (cid:88) u,v (cid:102) M uv ( η ) = (cid:88) i (cid:88) p C ip (cid:101) I p ( η ) F i (32)Since the C ip is independent of η , When η →
0, theoriginal amplitude can be written as M = (cid:88) i (cid:88) p C ip I p F i . (33)These scalar integrals { I p } can be further reduced intofinal master integrals via auxiliary mass flow or othermethods. III. PLANAR DOUBLE-BOX DIAGRAM INTHE SINGLE-TOP PRODUCTION
In this section, we implement our improved approachon one double-box diagram of the tW production process b ( k ) + g ( k ) → W ( k ) + t ( k ). The Feynman diagramis shown in Fig.1, which is plotted by LaTeX package TikZ-Feynman [90].
12 34 k − k + q + q k bk g k Wk tq g − k + q bk + q g g k + q b q t − k + q g FIG. 1: Double-box diagram for the tW productionIts relevent modified amplitude can be written as (cid:102) M ( η ) = (cid:90) d D q d D q N ( q , q , k , k , k , k ) (cid:101) D (cid:101) D (cid:101) D (cid:101) D (cid:101) D (cid:101) D (cid:101) D , (34)where the denominators are (cid:101) D = ( q − k ) + ıη, (cid:101) D = ( q + k ) + ıη, (cid:101) D = ( k − k + q + q ) + ıη, (cid:101) D = ( k + q ) + ıη, (cid:101) D = ( q − k ) + ıη, (cid:101) D = q + ıη, (cid:101) D = q − m t + ıη. (35)Here m W is the mass of W boson and m t is the mass oftop quark. And we define s ≡ k · k ) ,s ≡ m W − k · k ) . (36)For reader’s convenience we explicitly show the numera-tor of this amplitude N ( q , q , k , k , k , k ) = − ıg g g ε µ ( k ) × ¯ u ( k ) γ µ ( /q + m t ) /ε ∗ ( k ) P L ( /q + /k ) γ µ ( /k − /q ) γ µ u ( k ) ×{ ( q − k ) µ g µ µ + (2 k + q ) µ g µ µ − ( k + 2 q ) µ g µ µ }×{ (2 k − k − q + 2 q ) µ g µ µ + (2 q + q + 2 k − k ) µ g µ µ + ( − q + q − k − k ) µ g µ µ } . (37)From this amplitude we can extract 10 linear independentform factors, F = ¯ u ( k ) P L /ε ( k ) /ε ∗ ( k ) u ( k ) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P L /ε ( k ) /k u ( k )( k · ε ∗ ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P L /ε ∗ ( k ) /k u ( k )( k · ε ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P L u ( k )( k · ε ( k ))( k · ε ∗ ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P L u ( k )( ε ( k ) · ε ∗ ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P R /ε ( k ) /ε ∗ ( k ) /k u ( k ) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P R /ε ( k ) u ( k )( k · ε ∗ ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P R /ε ∗ ( k ) u ( k )( k · ε ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P R /k u ( k )( k · ε ∗ ( k ))( k · ε ( k )) , F = ¯ u ( k ) P R /k u ( k )( ε ( k ) · ε ∗ ( k )) . (38)As mentioned in last section, the modified amplitude canbe decomposed into 15 parts (cid:102) M ( η ) = (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η )+ (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η )+ (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η )+ (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) + (cid:102) M , ( η ) . (39)In this paper we show the reduction results for the co-efficient of F . For simplicity, we only show the scalarintegrals I p with nonzero reduction coefficients. Conse-quently 198 out of 486 scalar integrals are remaining. Thereduction coefficients are kept up to (cid:15) . And the lengthof reduction coefficients can be effectively controlled. Forconvenience the constant factor ıg g g is factorizedout in the results. For instance, I ≡ (cid:90) d D q d D q ( k · q )( q · q )( q · q ) D D D D D D D , (40) and the corresponding reduction coefficient is C , = 2 s m t (cid:0) (cid:15) + 12 (cid:15) + 24 (cid:15) + 48 (cid:15) (cid:1) m t ( m W − s ) + s ( − m W + s + s ) . (41)The complete expressions of the set of scalar integrals andtheir reduction coefficients are shown in appendix. Tocross check the coefficients { C ,p } , we use the Tarasov’smethod [55] and IBP reduction to reduce the original am-plitude numerically. Then we also apply the numericalIBP reduction to { I p } . Finally the two reduction resultsare consistent. In IBP reduction procedure we use pack-ages FIRE [67, 68] and
LiteRed [74].
IV. CONCLUSION
In this paper, we improve the AMF method by takingthe truncation on (cid:15) in the matching procedure. And wereduce one planar double-box diagram for the tW pro-duction as the demonstration. The amplitude can beeasily reduced into 10 form factors. One coefficients ofthe form factors can be easily reduced into 198 scalarintegrals which include irreducible numerators. And thelength of the reduction coefficients can be effectively con-trolled. This approach can be implemented on someother important processes in the future. V. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
