Triceps training can be achieved through isolation or compound elbow extension exercises that also perform static contractions against external forces. Common isolation exercises include the pull-up bar pushdown, lying triceps extension, and behind-the-back arm extension. Compound exercises such as push-ups, bench press, close-grip bench press, and military press are also effective in working the triceps. Recent studies have found that static contraction exercises can also promote the strengthening of triceps. These movements include pull-up bars and lateral raises, which are also commonly used to strengthen the shoulder and back muscles.

Clinical significance

The triceps reflex, usually tested by tapping the triceps muscle, is a common way to check the function of the nerves in the arm. It mainly tests the function of the spinal nerves C6 and C7, especially the function of C7.
