Ocean stratification is a natural phenomenon where water is divided into layers based on density, which has important implications for the exchange of heat, carbon, oxygen and other nutrients in the ocean.

Formation of Ocean Layers

The stratification of the ocean is mainly caused by the different densities of water. Normally, warm water floats on top of cooler water because solar radiation heats the surface water and ocean breezes create a stable layer. According to research, as climate change occurs, the stratification of the ocean surface is gradually increasing, making mixing between different water layers more difficult.

Between 1956 and 2018, the rate of increase in the upper ocean stratification reached 0.7% to 1.2% per decade, showing the impact of climate change.

Mixture of upper and lower layers

The process of communication between the upper and lower layers of the ocean is driven primarily by wind. When cold water rises to the surface, it is called an upwelling current, while warm water forms a downwelling current as the cold water sinks. These processes are ubiquitous in the world's oceans and have different characteristics in different sea areas. As global temperatures rise, the absolute amount of warm water increases, further intensifying the stratification phenomenon.

Changes in seawater density

The density of water can be affected by many factors, primarily temperature, salinity and pressure. When the water temperature rises, the distance between water molecules increases, resulting in a decrease in density; conversely, an increase in salinity causes the density to increase. Such rapid changes, caused by temperature or salinity, form so-called density layers, which affect the hydrological structure of the entire ocean.

Globally, stratification is increasing most rapidly in the southern oceans, followed by the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans.

As the global average temperature rises, the temperature of ocean water is also increasing. This not only exacerbates ocean stratification, but also has an impact on the ecosystem. For example, as the upper water warms, the growth cycles and reproduction patterns of organisms are affected, leading to a reduction in fishery resources.
