From testing to the future: What surprises did the first unmanned test flight of the Dream Boat spacecraft bring?

China's continued progress in the space sector has reached another important milestone. On May 5, 2020, with the successful first unmanned test flight of the Mengzhou spacecraft, future space missions have shown great potential. The reusable space vehicle, developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), marks a key step for China in its manned space exploration.

Review of the test flight phase

As early as 2016, the prototype of Mengzhou was tested for the first time. With the successful launch of the Long March 7 rocket, the scaled-down return capsule successfully landed in the desert of Inner Mongolia. In 2020, with the launch of the Long March 5B, Mengzhou once again ushered in a key test flight, which consolidated many of the technologies needed for it in space missions.

During the 2020 test flight, the main payload covered a number of topics, including: advanced avionics systems, orbital performance evaluation, new thermal protection systems, and the deployment and descent mechanism of the parachute system. The success of these tests has laid a solid foundation for Mengzhou's future manned space missions.

During the test, Mengzhou's maximum re-entry speed reached 9 kilometers per second, which provided actual data for its successful handling of the challenge of high-speed re-entry.
