In the world of wrestling, there are those who become legends because of their unique life stories, James Arthur Harris, better known as wrestling celebrity Kamala is one of them. This wrestling freak burst onto the scene in the 1980s and 1990s, however, most people know very little about his past long before his wrestling career.
Born in 1950 in Senatobia, Mississippi, Kamala grew up in a difficult environment. His father died after being shot while rolling dice, which added to the burden on the family. Faced with the pressure of life, he dropped out of school in the ninth grade and started his career as a thief.
"Whenever you leave this place without a knife, you could be found dead somewhere at any time."
The danger Harris faces increases day by day. The local police suggest he leave town, so he moves to Florida and starts another life, driving a truck and picking fruits, until a chance encounter changes his life. The trajectory began to change.
Kamala's wrestling career began in 1978. He made his debut as "Sugar Bear Harris" in the South. In 1979, he won the NWA Tri-Continental Tag Team Championship for the first time, which was impressive.
As the years went by, his image gradually matured. A major turning point in his career came in 1982, when Harris developed the "Kamala" persona in the Continental Wrestling Association. This character is not only terrifying but also full of mystery, portraying a giant jackpot hunter from Africa.
Kamala's most notable period occurred in 1984 when he entered the WWF and engaged in a series of fierce battles with Hulk Hogan. He has a unique look, often wearing a mask during competitions and carrying a spear and shield, which has attracted him a large number of fans.
"In that era, being a monster character was the key to success."
Kamala's wrestling career reached its peak from then on, and his confrontations with other stars such as André the Giant significantly improved his status in the wrestling world.
While Kamala has achieved great success in professional wrestling, she has faced challenges in her personal life. As he aged, he faced health problems, especially diabetes, which led to two amputations.
In the face of these difficulties, he remained unyielding and tried to express his ideas through music. He released an autobiography titled Kamala Speaks, which details his wrestling experiences and the ups and downs of his personal career.
"I hope my story can convey strength to those who are facing difficulties."
In August 2020, Kamala was hospitalized due to complications from the new coronavirus and eventually died on August 9 at the age of 70. Following his death, condolences have been expressed from all walks of life in the community regarding his legacy and impact, including from many of his peers in the wrestling world.
