However, despite the great potential of GP, many researchers and developers often face the challenge of local optimality, which is an obstacle that makes the solution stay at a non-globally optimal solution.
Local optima are a common problem where many runs often cause the algorithm to converge to a suboptimal solution early on.
A key component in genetic programming is program evolution through genetic operations such as selection, crossover, and mutation. The purpose of these operations is to produce new offspring programs that are expected to be superior in quality to the previous generation. However, even though this process appears to conform to the basic principles of natural selection, it is still susceptible to local optima.
The emergence of local optimality is usually related to the following factors:
Diversity of starting population
: If the initial population is too similar, it may not explore enough solution space, leading to early convergence.
Selection Pressure
: Excessive selection pressure may cause excellent programs to be copied too quickly, thereby weakening exploration and limiting innovation.
Design of mutation and crossover operations
: These operations, if not designed properly, may result in new offspring that do not significantly improve performance.
Multiple runs are usually necessary to produce reasonably good results.
For the local optimal problem, researchers have proposed a variety of solutions:
Increase the population size
