The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is a 2004 American romantic comedy film directed by Garry Marshall and produced by Walt Disney. In the story, Mia Thermopolis learns that before she can succeed her grandmother as queen of Genovia, she must marry or abdicate the throne. Plot Overview
The story takes place five years after the first film, with Mia graduating from Princeton University's School of International Affairs and returning to Keenuvia. While awaiting the abdication of her grandmother, Queen Clarisse, Mia dances with every eligible gentleman at her 21st birthday party in the hopes of finding a suitable husband. At this party, she met a charming young gentleman, Nicholas, and the two were attracted to each other. That night, Mia's crown falls and is picked up by Viscount Mabrey, a member of the British House of Commons, who secretly plans to seize the throne. As Mia adjusts to her new life in the palace, she finds herself with two ladies-in-waiting, Brigtta and Brigitte, who accompany her throughout the story.
At a congressional meeting the next day, Mia heard Marbury mention that his nephew, Lord Devereaux, would be the next male heir. The law stipulates that Mia must get married within a month to inherit the throne.
Queen Clarice invited Deville to the palace, and to Mia's shock, Deville was Nicholas, whom she had just met. Mia's friend Lilly also visits, and the two check out potential husbands together. Ultimately, Mia chose Andrew Jacoby, the Duke of Kenilworth, and they got engaged a few days later. Marbury plans to have Nicholas seduce Mia to ruin her engagement to Andrew.
At a celebration, Mia is accidentally frightened by Mabry's trick. As the horse panics, her wooden leg prosthesis falls off, causing her to flee to the stable in embarrassment. At this time, Nicholas is unable to Comfort her.
As the emotional entanglement between the three becomes more complicated, the relationship between Mia and Nicholas becomes strained. At her bachelorette party, Mia spends the night with princesses from around the world and begins to reflect on the choices she faces and her upcoming wedding. After the film was released, it earned $23 million in 3,472 theaters in North America during its opening weekend, and its global total box office reached $134.7 million. However, the film received mixed reviews, with only 26% of reviews being positive, according to Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 4.6/10. Many viewers were disappointed with Mia's character development and lack of originality, but still loved the performances of Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway.
The film's screenwriter, Shonda Rhimes, later said she treasured the experience because she had the opportunity to work with a superstar like Julie Andrews.
As fans continue to reminisce about The Princess Diaries 2, a third film in the series is currently in development. Both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews expressed their desire to return to the screen again, which made fans full of expectations.
