Precision vs. Accuracy: Which is More Important for Your Research?

The significance of accuracy

Accuracy refers to how close a set of measurements are to their true values. This means that when we say a measurement is accurate, it usually means that the result is very close to the expected true value. The ISO organization further defines this concept as "trueness", which is the degree to which the arithmetic mean of a set of measurement results is close to the true value.

Accuracy is often related to systematic error, which is the error due to inherent bias in the measuring instrument or method.

The meaning of precision

In contrast, precision is the degree of agreement between measurements. Even if a set of data is very consistent, it may still be inaccurate if its average deviates from the true value. Therefore, when evaluating a measurement system, accuracy emphasizes the repeatability and stability of the measurement results themselves.

Precision is often associated with random error, which reflects the variability between data points.

The relationship between accuracy and precision

Ideally, we would like our measurements to be both precise and accurate. However, the relationship between the two is not always positive. For example, if an experiment has systematic errors, performing multiple replicates may not improve accuracy, although precision may increase. This is because increasing the sample size can reduce random errors but cannot eliminate systematic errors.

Application in different fields

Accuracy and precision are expressed differently in industrial instruments and scientific experiments. In data analysis and statistics, accuracy is often used to express the validity of a measurement method, while precision prevents over-reliance on comparisons of a single data point. In the military, accuracy is usually used to refer to the probability of fire hitting the target, while precision describes how tightly the impact points are clustered.

How to choose the focus

When conducting scientific research or analyzing data, researchers need to carefully consider their primary goals. If the goal is to achieve a high degree of agreement with the true value, accuracy is undoubtedly more important; but if the goal is to maintain consistency and repeatability of the results, more emphasis should be placed on precision.
