Adelil’s initial journey
Adelil Antonio de Cali was born in Brazil in 1967 and encountered many challenges in his life, including the divorce of his parents and the early death of his mother. These difficult years shaped his character and made him a humble priest with strong convictions. In 2003, Adelil was ordained in the church and began his pastoral career in southern Brazil.

While serving as rector of a parish in the port city of Paranagua, he created a spiritual rest area for truck drivers to care for these workers who were constantly on the road. He often held masses for truck drivers at the port and called on society to improve the rights of homeless people.
A combination of dreams and adventure
To raise public awareness and funds for the spiritual rest area, Adelir decided to break the world record for balloon flights. The priest had no formal training in ballooning, but he still chose to take on the adventure himself, a decision that was full of symbols of faith and courage.

On April 20, 2008, despite the bad weather, Adelir still chose to take off, carrying 1,000 colorful hydrogen balloons across the clouds and fog in an attempt to fly higher into the sky. He planned to reach Dorado, Minas Gerais, in 20 hours, but his flight turned more thrilling.
Mysterious loss of contact
Shortly after the flight began, Adelil encountered difficulties as he flew higher than he expected. He sent his last distress message and had flown about 90 kilometers. His condition suddenly deteriorated and all contact with the outside world was almost cut off. As time passed, the Navy and Air Force launched a search and rescue operation, but the results were heartbreaking.
When the Navy announced on April 29 that it was switching to a search for his possible whereabouts, Adelir's fate had already emerged. At this point, fragments of his balloon began to appear on the surface of the ocean, and the search tapered off over the next few months.
The glory and heavy price of human nature
Eventually, Adelil's body was found and identified in July. The whole process undoubtedly makes people feel a sense of loss and sadness, but it also prompts people to reflect on the boundaries of adventure. Adelil's story is not only a feat of a priest, but also an epitome of calling for society to cherish every person who strives for love and faith.
