Lohmann & Rauscher (L&R) is a German-Austrian manufacturer of medical devices and hygiene products with roots dating back to 1851. In 1998, Lohmann of Germany and Rauscher of Austria merged to form Lohmann & Rauscher International GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Rengsdorf, Germany and Vienna, Austria. L&R's clients include hospitals, physicians, nurses, pharmacies, as well as retailers and medical suppliers, with operations around the world. Today, the company has production facilities in several countries and employs more than 5,500 people.
Lohmann's history began in 1851 when Julius Lüscher founded the first company registered in Frankfurt, Germany. Over time, Lohmann gradually expanded its product range and the Austrian company Rauscher was founded in 1899 and quickly became the largest manufacturer of surgical dressings in the Danube region.
"L&R's growth and transformation have not only driven the company's development, but also led the evolution of the global medical industry."
In the 1930s, L&R introduced Cellona, a ready-to-use plaster bandage, an innovation that made the use of plaster technology simpler and more popular. The launch of the Rosidal pressure bandage in 1961 also marked the company's diversification. These products are not only improving the quality of patient care, but also changing the way the healthcare industry operates.
In the early 1970s, Lohmann began its international expansion with the opening of sales offices in Europe. As the market changed, L&R introduced the OR Set Systems in 1987, marking the standardization of surgical preparations.
"L&R continues to pursue innovation, combining higher product quality with customer needs, leading the medical industry to benefit from safer and more effective medical solutions."
Despite war and other global challenges, L&R persisted in its internationalization strategy. After the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the company quickly adjusted production and successfully switched to the production of rapid testing equipment, contributing to the global medical emergency.
In 2024, L&R completed an extensive modernization in Neuwied, Germany, laying the foundation for future production capacity and environmental sustainability. In addition, the closure of Angiokard Medizintechnik also highlights the challenges the company faces in terms of rising raw material and transportation costs, as well as the need to adjust its production strategy.
"Everything L&R does is to lead the innovation of medical products and improve the level of the global medical industry."
L&R's efforts in the medical industry have also been recognized by all walks of life. In 2022, the company received the Cardinal Comeback Award for its contributions during COVID-19, while its trauma management training program in Malaysia also won the Tigos NÖ International Participation Award.
As the global healthcare industry continues to change, how will Lohmann & Rauscher adjust its strategy in the future to meet changing market demands?
