The mysterious past of West China Medical Center: How did it become China's top medical institution founded by missionaries?
West China Medical Center, located at Sichuan University, is one of the top medical research institutions in China. However, the origins of this school are full of missionary efforts and pursuits. West China Union University, founded in 1914, was born out of the cooperation of foreign missionaries, which meant the opening of a new chapter in the field of medical education in China at that time.

The predecessor of West China Medical Center was West China Union University, which was jointly founded by the American Baptist Church, the Methodist Church and the Canadian Methodist Church in 1910. The school's medical school was founded in 1914 and offers courses in basic and clinical medicine, as well as biomedicine and dentistry. Three years later, it became the first medical school in China to teach dentistry. This initiative was undoubtedly a breakthrough for women to enter the medical field in China at that time. As history progresses, West China Medical Center has undergone many transformations and reforms. In 1951, the school was taken over by the Sichuan Provincial Government and renamed West China University. In 1953, it was changed again to Sichuan Medical College, focusing on medical research and education. Against this backdrop, the school continued to develop and was eventually renamed West China University of Medical Sciences in 1985. It was merged into Sichuan University in 2000 to become the West China Medical Center.

Today, West China Medical Center has the School of Basic and Forensic Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health and School of Pharmacy, as well as several affiliated hospitals. It still maintains a high level of medical and teaching quality, especially the West China Hospital, which is like the pinnacle of the medical community and has been ranked among the top three hospitals in China for many years.
