hat is Monotheism? How does Islam explain the "oneness" of God?
The concept of "monotheism" is called "Tawhid" in Islam, which means the uniqueness of God. This core concept is the foundation of the Muslim faith, around which all religious laws revolve. According to Islamic teachings, God is indivisible. This concept (ahad and wahid) directly affects the practice of faith of every Muslim and spreads to their daily life. Therefore, Tawhid is not just a theoretical concept, but is deeply rooted in every aspect of the Muslim worldview.
Tawhid is the fundamental creed that Muslims swear allegiance to; recognition of the oneness of God is the first step in Islamic faith, and any other faith must be based on this.
In the Qur'an, the concept of "Tawhid" is repeatedly emphasized, regarding this concept as the highest expression of truth. It is true that Islam considers God to be a transcendent being, completely separate from humans, nature and the universe. According to the teachings of Islam, the understanding of God's oneness is different from that of other religions, which makes Islam particularly unique in comparison with other major religions.
The Qur'an mentions: "If there were different gods here, then all this would be destroyed." This logic emphasizes the cosmic order and peace brought about by the oneness of God.
Along with the preaching of Tawhid, the historical development of the Muslim community shows the understanding and interpretation of this concept in different generations. For example, theology, philosophy and Sufism have all built a pluralistic ideological framework to explore and explain "uniqueness". At the same time, this also triggered debates between different sects, including differences in interpretations of hadiths and textual exegesis, which added rich content to the development of Islam.
Different dimensions of Tawhid
Tawhid can be subdivided into several dimensions. The three most specific levels are: first, God's sovereignty (Rububiyah), that is, God's role as creator; second, God's name and attributes (Al-Asma wa's-Sifat); third, the sole of worship Nature (Al-'Ibadah), that is, all worship activities should be attributed only to God and not to any other being. Through these dimensions, a more comprehensive understanding of God’s oneness and its influence on every aspect of a Muslim’s life can be gained.
"To know God is to know His unity." This sentence summarizes the Islamic understanding of the uniqueness of God and derives a series of profound moral and ethical norms.
However, the influence of Tawhid is not limited to religious belief. Its core concepts also extend to the social and cultural fields, emphasizing that human activities should reflect the reverence and respect for God. This respect is reflected in all daily actions, moral judgments and guidelines for personal life.
Warning for "Shirk"
In the Islamic framework, confusing the status of God with any other being is called "Shirk" and is considered an unforgivable sin. This warning does not exist only in theory, but has become an important wake-up call in the daily lives of believers. According to the teachings of the Quran, "fantasy" placing others above God or as God's partner is undoubtedly the greatest challenge to true faith.
"Indeed, God does not condone the practice of mixing His worship with other things, but He does forgive anything else that He wills." These verses clearly warn believers that so-called "Shirk" is the most serious sin.
In this sense, Tawhid not only emphasizes the uniqueness of God, but also further strengthens personal responsibility, forcing believers to always remain loyal and pious to God.
