"Sap" is the second music EP of the American rock band Alice in Chains. It was released on February 4, 1992 through Columbia Records. The EP features mostly acoustic instrumentation and marks guitarist Jerry Cantrell's debut as lead vocalist on an Alice in Chains release, featuring on "Brother."
"Sap" was recorded by Alice in Chains after the tour for their debut album Facelift. According to Cantrell's recollection, he originally entered the recording studio for a movie episode "Would?", but eventually developed about ten songs, including all the tracks on the subsequent "Sap EP". They quickly focused on recording the new material, eventually co-writing it at London Bridge Studios with producer Rick Parashar.
The recording process for this EP was short and efficient, usually completed in just four to five days. During this process, drummer Sean Kinney dreamed of making an EP called "Sap," which set the band's direction.
Music and Lyrics
On this EP, lead singer Layne Staley encouraged Cantrell to try out as a vocalist. Cantrell sang solo on "Brother" and sang with Staley on "Got Me Wrong." The album also featured Ann Wilson of Heart, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Mark Arm of Mudhoney.
In Brother, Cantrell describes his relationship with his brother, particularly the period after his parents' divorce. He said the song was "trying to build a bridge" and hoped to express his feelings of missing him.
Also in Got Me Wrong, Cantrell explores relationships, how people misunderstand each other's expectations, and considers the differences between men and women. He mentioned that the song is a true portrayal of the gap between love and expectations. A version of "Rooster" was originally recorded during the production of "Sap" but was eventually included on the album "Dirt", while an earlier version of the song was included on the compilation album released in 1999.
Issue and response
"Sap" was released on February 4, 1992. At that time, the band did not want advertising or promotion, but just wanted the album to be found by true fans. Cantrell said the album, released just as Nirvana's "Nevermind" topped the Billboard 200, catapulted the Seattle band to popularity and helped fuel the rise of "grunge music."
"Sap" quickly received an enthusiastic response from the audience and was certified as a gold record, selling more than 500,000 copies. When it was re-released in 1995, the song "Got Me Wrong" entered the pop music charts again as an episode of the movie "Clerks".
The reissue of "Sap" includes lyrics and a slightly different cover design, which reinvigorates the album. The band also performed "Brother" and "Got Me Wrong" during a live performance on MTV Unplugged. The charm of this album is that it is not only a contemporary record, but also a witness to the musical journey of Alice in Chains.

All tracks were written by Jerry Cantrell, except "Am I Inside," which had lyrics provided by Layne Staley and music written by Cantrell.
