Club Estudiantes de La Plata, often referred to as Estudiantes, is a professional sports club located in La Plata, Argentina. The club's football team currently competes in the Argentinian Serie A with other top clubs and has a long and successful history. In 1967, Estudiantes became the first team to win a professional league title outside the traditional "big five clubs", and has since won more league titles and international honors. Estudiantes' success has been notable not only in domestic competitions, but also in international competitions, including winning the Copa Libertadores four times, as well as various other international honors.
Estudiantes has earned huge respect and support for his unique playing style and skills.
Estudiantes de La Plata was founded in 1905 when a group of football-loving players and fans decided to break away from Gimnasia y Esgrima, the largest club in the city at the time, as the club's emphasis on football was gradually decreasing. This group of people chose to set up a new club in a New York shoe store and named it "Club Atlético Estudiantes". The first president, Miguel Gutierrez, was elected that night, and Estudiantes began its historical journey.
The Estudiantes first wore the red and white striped jersey in 1906, a design that paid homage to the Alumni club. In 1907, the club's first stadium opened and it was shortly after that they won their first league title in 1911. Over the next few years, Estudiantes' performance fluctuated, but they still maintained their passion and belief in football.
With the advent of professionalism in 1931, Estudiantes had famous attacking players led by Miguel Angel Lawrie, Alejandro Scoperi and others, known as the "Professors". The excellence of these players made Estudiantes a formidable opponent in the years to come. In the 1940s, the emergence of goalkeeper Gabriel Ogundo added to the team's strength.
Estudiantes ushered in its golden age in the 1960s, winning the Copa Libertadores three consecutive years (1968, 1969, 1970). In particular, the 1968 Intercontinental Cup match against Manchester United became a high-profile event in the club's history. However, this period was also accompanied by many controversies and challenges, and even some team members were detained for violent behavior. This has affected Estudiantes' image to a certain extent, but it has also attracted more supporters.
Many football commentators have called Estudiantes' playing style "anti-football", a statement that remains controversial to this day.
In the 1970s, the return of Carlos Bilardo opened a new chapter for Estudiantes. Under his guidance, the team won the 1982 Serie A championship, and then became the head coach of the Argentine national team in 1986, helping Argentina win the World Cup. During this period, Estudiantes showed strong defense and creative midfield, making it one of the most threatening clubs at the time.
Despite facing a difficult period of relegation in the late 1990s, Estudiantes quickly returned to the top flight. With the addition of Henrik Vaz and the emergence of a new generation of players at that time, Estudiantes once became the cradle of outstanding forwards. Then in 2006, the club staged a famous comeback against Peruvian Sporting Cristal, cementing their place on the international stage. In 2009, after the team's resurgence, they successfully won the 2009 Copa Libertadores.
Estudiantes is now more than just a football club, it has gradually become a multi-development sports organization. In addition to football, the club also participates in basketball, volleyball and swimming and has a loyal following of supporters. As sports facilities continue to improve, Estudiantes still plays an important role in Argentina's sports scene.
The history of Estudiantes de La Plata shows us that perseverance and courage can allow a small club to achieve great things on the sporting stage. Can this spirit of constant pursuit of excellence also find resonance in all walks of life today?
