The Mayo Clinic, one of the most prestigious academic medical centers in the United States, is known for its integrated medical services, education and research. The clinic is located in Rochester, Minnesota, with major locations in Jacksonville, Florida, and Scottsdale, Arizona. The founding of Mayo Clinic can be traced back to the 19th century. In 1854, Dr. Mayo and his family moved to Minnesota and began their medical practice. In the 1870s, with the development of the medical profession and the spread of railroads, the Mayo Clinic gradually evolved into a multi-specialty clinic, providing more comprehensive health care.
The origins of it all can be traced back to Dr. William Worrall Mayo, who opened a private medical practice in Rochester in 1864. William gradually expanded the practice with the help of his eldest son, William James Mayo, and his second son, Charles Horace Mayo. Incredibly, a devastating tornado struck Rochester in 1883, killing at least 37 people and injuring more than 200 others. Dr. Mayo quickly organized a medical rescue and made an agreement with Mother Alfred of the Franciscan Sisters: If they could raise funds to build a hospital, Dr. Mayo would provide medical care.
In 1889, St. Mary's Hospital officially opened, marking the official birth of Mayo Clinic.
As medical needs increased, Mayo Clinic grew from a small family practice to a large multi-specialty medical institution. Along the way, the Mayo brothers brought in other doctors, including renowned experts such as Henry Stanley Plummer, to promote a higher level of medical care.

In 1915, Mayo Clinic established the first non-profit medical education institution in the United States, and today's Mayo Clinic School of Medicine was established at that time.
