As global demand for sustainable transportation systems increases, Sarawak is quickly becoming a leader in promoting "green technology". The Malaysian state is not only committed to reducing traffic congestion, but is also at the forefront of developing hydrogen-fueled electric vehicles and automated rail systems. Currently under construction, Sarawak’s Urban Transport System (KUTS) is the first autonomous rail rapid transit (ART) system outside of Asia, marking a major breakthrough for Sarawak in the field of smart transportation.
The Sarawak State Government stated that this system will connect the city of Kuchi and its surrounding areas, providing an effective solution to the increasingly serious traffic congestion.
KUTS is an automated railway system network in and around the city of Kutch, covering Kutch, Samaha and Sirian. The system is being constructed by Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro), and the funding required comes from the Sarawak Development Bank. At the same time, the system plans to use hydrogen fuel technology to combine hydrogen fuel trains with trackless electric buses to provide an environmentally friendly and efficient transportation method.
Hydrogen fuel technology is developing particularly rapidly in Sarawak. According to the plan, Kutch City will become the first city in Malaysia to introduce hydrogen buses to complement hydrogen fuel trains.
"The future of transportation needs to go beyond tradition and we are looking for sustainable solutions powered by hydrogen fuel."
According to the plan on December 16, 2022, the first phase of KUTS will include a 69.9-kilometer route with 31 stations connecting major areas. The plan is implemented in three lines and is expected to be put into use in 2025. The Blue Line will first connect the major points of Kutch city to provide easy access for citizens and students.
For students, this is not only an innovation in transportation, but also a change in lifestyle.
Although the KUTS project has faced some delays and challenges in its initial design, Sarawak Metro's professional team is still working on combining hydrogen fuel and automation system technologies to create a cost-effective and environmentally friendly transportation solution. Since 2018, the province has decided to join hands with China's ART system to implement this plan in the near future and will break the boundaries of traditional transportation.
As KUTS enters the construction stage until 2024, the progress of this system will continue to attract domestic and foreign attention. The government of Sarawak has revealed that the delivery and trial operation of the first batch of ART vehicles will be completed in the next few years, and it is expected that the official launch will change people's travel patterns.
Facing the challenge of climate change, Sarawak’s efforts in green transportation technology are obvious to all. With the rapid development of hydrogen fuel vehicles and automated railways, can Sarawak become a model for other cities in the future?
