How did two 10-year-old boys plan and carry out such a brutal crime?
On February 12, 1993, a shocking incident occurred in Merseyside, England. Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, who were only 10 years old, kidnapped two-year-old James Patrick Bulger and subjected him to unimaginable cruelty, ultimately resulting in his death. The case not only drew national attention but also re-examined the legal treatment of young offenders.

Observations before kidnapping
On the day of this tragedy, two boys kept observing other children in the shopping mall, appearing to have some evil intentions. They had already skipped school and had stolen some gadgets and food in shopping malls. One boy later recalled that before abducting Bulger, the two boys had planned to kidnap another child and push him onto a busy road.
Kidnapping incident
That afternoon, Bulger and his mother were in the business center. Because his mother went to pay, Bulger temporarily let go of her hand. At this point, Thompson and Venables approached him, took his hands and led him out of the mall. The disturbing moment was captured on CCTV cameras.
Bulger was taken to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal where two boys pushed him to the ground, causing injuries to his face.
Brutal torture and murder
Following the kidnapping, Thompson and Venables inflicted relentless violence on Bulger. Not only did they leave him injured, they sprayed him in the eyes with blue paint they had stolen, and on a two-and-a-half-mile journey it seemed like no passers-by chose to intervene. The thugs eventually took him to the railway line near the former Walton and Anfield railway station and inflicted more injuries on him, even hitting him on the head with heavy objects, causing up to 42 wounds. .
After a forensic examination of Bulger's body, it was determined that he had died before being run over by the train.
Case investigation and arrest
Police quickly launched an investigation after discovering Bulger's body, and soon suspected Thompson and Venables. The case attracted intense media attention and investigators discovered that two boys were wearing the same blue paint that Bulger was wearing and were eventually arrested.
Beginning of legal proceedings
As the case progressed, public opinion began to react strongly, and people condemned the punishment policy for young criminals. During the hearing, Thompson and Venables denied murder and other charges, but after prosecutors presented detailed evidence, the two boys were found guilty in court as the youngest murderers.
