In the Russia-Ukraine war, how did U.S. military assistance affect the war situation?

Since Russia launched all-out aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the conflict has become Europe's largest war since World War II. In these 21 months, Ukraine received a total of more than 44 billion U.S. dollars in military assistance from the United States, and more than 35 billion U.S. dollars in aid from other allies. These aids are provided in the form of reserve supplies. As these supplies are consumed, the industrial bases of allied countries have gradually stepped in to supply Ukraine, but they have not been fully operational as of November 2023.

Although Ukraine is not a member of NATO, many Western countries have provided it with a total aid of nearly $160 billion.

Since 2014, Western countries’ military assistance to Ukraine has continued to increase. From 2014 to 2021, most military assistance was non-lethal, with lethal assistance not increasing until 2018. Military forces from multiple countries quickly coordinated to provide assistance when Russian troops massed on Ukraine's borders, which was crucial to Ukraine's resistance.

Changes in arms sales and aid

As the war escalated, arms sales policies also changed. Countries such as Germany and Sweden have allocated funds to provide offensive armaments, and even the European Union as a whole has provided more than 3.1 billion euros in military support, including lethal weapons.

Ukraine's urgent need for weapons became very obvious in June 2022. If Western countries had made preparations and commitments earlier, Ukraine would have been able to deploy assistance immediately at that time.

The United States is undoubtedly the largest supplier of military aid in this conflict. From February to March, the United States provided $2.93 billion in military aid to Ukraine. Of the $112 billion in aid approved by the U.S. Congress in 2022, much is earmarked for military equipment. Over time, the Biden administration even requested more than $61.4 billion in additional aid in October 2023.

The role of the United States in Ukraine’s defense

U.S. military assistance is not limited to materials, but also includes training, maintenance, and material delivery, which allows Ukraine to continue fighting on the battlefield. With the introduction of various advanced weapons, Ukraine's military capabilities have been significantly improved, which poses a direct threat to Russia.

U.S. assistance advances Ukraine's resistance capabilities, particularly the recent introduction of the High Mobility Multiple Rocket System (HIMARS), which is seen as a key "game changer."

However, such support is not without its challenges. As the war continues, Ukraine's equipment consumption has greatly accelerated, and there has even been a shortage of some weapons and ammunition. A large amount of Soviet-era equipment needs to be replaced, and new Western weapons systems are not yet fully available.

Future assistance and challenges

U.S. support for Ukraine will continue, but according to the U.S. National Security Council, the lower limit of the possibility of long-term support still exists, and both economic and political factors may affect future funding allocations. As Ukraine's reconstruction needs become increasingly urgent, how to effectively integrate support from the international community will become the key to determining the direction of the war.

As the West continues to provide assistance to Ukraine, Russia's response and actions will also face new challenges. Does this mean that there will be a fundamental change in the development of the war?

On the whole, U.S. military assistance has undoubtedly affected Ukraine’s combat capabilities and the development of the war situation. In such a complex situation, how will the support of the international community shape the future and direction of this war in the future has become a question worthy of our in-depth consideration.
