Muishunte died under mysterious circumstances under guard. Why do his family suspect government involvement?
On February 7, 2024, former El Salvador national security adviser Jago Alejandro Muisunte died under custody, sparking his family's doubts about the government. Muishunte served as the national security adviser to El Salvador President Nayib Bukir from 2019 to 2023, and during his political career, he received widespread attention for his exposure of drug crimes. Shortly after his arrest, Muishunte's health deteriorated rapidly and he eventually died in prison. His family was suspicious of the cause of his death, believing that the government was involved in the mysterious circumstances and suspecting that he might have been tortured.

There are many unknown details behind Muishunte’s death. He publicly accused Erick García, a member of the New Idea Party, in July and August 2023, saying he was related to the MS-13 drug trade. The accusation ultimately led to Garcia's arrest and expulsion from parliament, but also left Muishunte himself severely damaged by the political struggle. With Muisunte's arrest, Bukier accused him of being a double agent for former President Mauricio Fines and saw it as a strategic diversion to deal with the investigation into himself.
For Muisunte’s family, his rapid death was shocking, especially since they had not received any first-hand medical information after he suffered a stroke. In this regard, Muisunte His mother said that this all showed that he lacked necessary medical care. In addition, Muishunte's family found blood stains on the clothes he was wearing at the time of his arrest, deepening their suspicion of the government.

His final days in the hospital also attracted attention. Muishunte's health was revealed, with reports that he suffered from pulmonary edema while hospitalized, at a time when authorities were releasing overly optimistic news.
