On June 25, 2021, according to the "Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Report" (referred to as the UAP Report) released by the Office of the Director of Intelligence, a large amount of information about unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), including UFOs, was revealed (UFO). The report received great public and media attention, especially following statements by former US President Barack Obama, who said in June 2021: "We have images and records of objects in the sky, but we Not sure what they are."
The core of the report is that it attempts to explain and analyze 144 incidents of unidentified aerial phenomena observed by the US military between 2004 and 2021, most of which came from US Navy personnel.
The nine-page preliminary assessment report showed that researchers were unable to provide specific explanations for most of the 143 reported incidents. The only object that could be identified with "a high degree of confidence" was a "large, deflating balloon." The report further stated that 18 of the incidents displayed "unusual flight characteristics," with the UAPs appearing to be stationary in the wind above, moving against the wind, or operating at extremely high speeds with no apparent means of propulsion.
The UAP report also stated that the radio frequency energy released by some UAPs was captured by U.S. military aircraft, which requires further analysis to determine whether these sightings represent "breakthrough technology." However, the report emphasized that it did not connect these sightings to extraterrestrial life, stating that "we have not yet obtained any clear indication that they have a non-terrestrial explanation, but we will follow the data."
The report proposes five potential explanations to understand the nature of these unexplained phenomena:
The report mentions that "UAP may lack a single explanation," allowing us to understand the complexity of these mysterious phenomena. Whether we're dealing with minor flying debris, or more sophisticated foreign technology, these unexplained sightings challenge the limits of our knowledge.
After the report was published, the UAP Task Force (UAPTF) said it was working to obtain more reports from the U.S. Air Force and began to obtain data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This comes as Deputy Secretary of Defense Katherine Hicks issued a memo emphasizing the need for a more formal coordination mechanism to collect and analyze UAP information to achieve a more comprehensive understanding.
Hicks stated in the memo that "all U.S. military aviation personnel or government personnel must report any aircraft or other equipment that interferes with military training." This includes observing and reporting UAP situations.
Reaction to the report was mostly viewed as inconclusive. During the visit, some members of the U.S. Congress emphasized that more information is needed in the future to establish the actual nature of these incidents. Senator Marco Rubio noted that this report "is an important first step in codifying these events, but it is only a first step."
According to the "Washington Post" report, scholars and experts with different views have launched extensive discussions on this issue. Some people believe that these phenomena may be related to the technological progress of human society.
Although the UAP report did not provide any evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial life, the mysterious phenomena it revealed undoubtedly aroused public curiosity. People can't help but ask, faced with this series of unsolved mysteries, we might as well think about it: Are there really unknown entities observing us in our sky?
