The mysterious journey of Hurricane Oron: How did it quickly intensify to a Category 4 hurricane in just a few days?
In October 2022, Hurricane Oron caused minor damage along the Pacific coast of Mexico and became the sixteenth named storm, ninth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2022 Pacific hurricane season. Oron originally originated from a low-pressure area off the coast of Mexico. As it moved northward, it gradually intensified and became a hurricane on October 1. It reached its peak intensity the next day, with wind speeds of 130 mph (215 km/h). . As Oron entered Mexico, it brought strong winds and rainfall, causing power outages and infrastructure damage in some areas.

Meteorological History
On September 25, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that an area of low pressure located a few miles off the coast of southwest Mexico had the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone. Over time, this low-pressure area unleashed large patches of irregular rainfall and thunderstorm activity, which satellite images show gradually became more organized. By September 29, the NHC issued a warning for Tropical Depression Sixteen, which intensified into a tropical storm a few hours later and was named Oron.
Oren gradually organized into a small, dense central cloud. Following a surge in deep convection and progressive intensification in satellite imagery, Oron intensified into a hurricane at 15:00 UTC on October 1. Oron continued to intensify throughout the day, eventually reaching Category 4 hurricane strength on October 2, with winds of up to 130 mph. Later, southwesterly wind shear began to increase, causing the hurricane to weaken.
Preparation and Impact
As Oron approached, the Mexican government issued a hurricane warning for Islas Marias on September 30, while a tropical storm warning was hoisted for the coastal areas of San Blas and Manzanillo. Sinaloa state opened several emergency shelters and closed the ports of Manzanillo and Puerto Valta.
Flights at the airport were suspended due to the approaching hurricane, according to the Mazatlan Tourism Ministry.
Heavy rain caused landslides on the Durango-Mazatlan highway and affected power supplies in some areas. In addition, strong winds in Eskinapa caused a power tower to collapse, causing a brief power outage in the area.
According to reports, Oron affected approximately 700 families and 242 schools suffered minor damage. Although the storm caused varying degrees of damage to transportation and infrastructure, no significant casualties have been reported so far, according to Nyari's security minister.
