The Yellow River, a river with a total length of 5,464 kilometers, is not only the second longest river in China, but also the sixth longest river in the world. Originating from the Bayan Har Mountains and flowing eastward to the Bohai Sea, the Yellow River gave birth to and influenced countless ancient civilizations during its long journey. The formation and history of the Yellow River
The history of the Yellow River can be traced back to 2100 BC, when the Xia Dynasty was established on its banks. According to historical records, this dynasty was the result of the alliance of surrounding tribes in the face of repeated flood threats. This river breeds fertile soil and brings vitality to agriculture, but it also creates one of the most tragic natural disasters in human history due to frequent diversions and floods that often circle cities and villages.

The disaster of flood
Historically, the number of deaths caused by floods in the Yellow River is incalculable. The root cause of these disasters is that fine-grained sediments produced by the Loess Plateau cause long-term accumulation at the bottom of river beds, and unpredictable natural dams eventually trigger catastrophic overflows.
The cultural significance of the Yellow River
In addition to its physical properties and catastrophic impact, the Yellow River is also culturally deeply embedded in the Chinese psyche. In Chinese mythology, the giant Kuafu drained the Yellow River of water in his desire to chase the sun. In ancient literature, the Yellow River is not only a river in the geographical sense, but also an important symbol of ancient society and culture. Many important political events in history, such as floods and sieges, are closely related to the Yellow River basin, and the river indirectly shaped China's political landscape.
The modern Yellow River
Today, the Yellow River basin has a population of more than 120 million, and 4.2 million residents directly depend on the water source of this river. Facing the growing demand for water, China has launched the north-south water allocation project in 2003 in an effort to alleviate water pressure and flood threats. However, as early as the 1970s, flow and sediment transport within the basin had decreased fivefold. This situation has had a great impact on China's agricultural development, especially in the face of water shortages. How to rationally utilize and distribute water resources has become a realistic question.
