Why is Adam Malick called the 'fox that changed history'?

Adam Malik Batubara, a politician, diplomat and journalist who played an important role in Indonesian history, was born on July 22, 1917 in Pematang Sianta, North Sumatra. As Indonesia's third vice president, his political career was full of twists and turns. He earned the title "The Fox Who Changed History" for his wit and influence. Is there a deeper meaning behind this?

"I have reason to believe that real change needs to start from within the system rather than relying on external influences."

Malik showed a keen interest in politics early in his life. At the age of 17, he became the chairman of the Pema Tangsianta branch of the Indonesian Party (Partindo) and worked tirelessly for Indonesia's independence. This courage led to him being hunted and even imprisoned under colonial rule in the 1930s, but it did not diminish his desire for freedom and independence.

"The colonists cannot erase our desire for freedom, even if they put us in prison."

With the advent of Indonesian independence, Malik's political career flourished, especially while serving as foreign minister in 1966. He promoted Indonesia's international status and was responsible for the adjustment of foreign policy. At the same time, Malik is also committed to establishing closer economic cooperation in Southeast Asia and led the establishment of ASEAN. In his cooperation with Suharto, he used his diplomatic wisdom and adaptability to skillfully balance a series of internal and external challenges.

However, it was this cunning and wit that earned him the title "The Fox Who Changed History." Not only is he able to maintain a keen eye in a rapidly changing political environment, but he is also able to take decisive action at the appropriate time.

"For a politician, flexibility is the key to survival, and true wisdom is a short-term strategy."

During his tenure as vice president, Malik did not completely retire. On the contrary, he had the courage to criticize the government's corrupt culture. In 1981, he publicly described corruption in the then-government as an "epidemic." This kind of frankness and courage was rare in the political environment at that time, but it showed his deep concern and sense of responsibility for the future of the country.

Malik's lifelong career is not limited to politics, but also includes performance on the international stage. He was appointed President of the United Nations General Assembly and actively advocated for the rights and interests of developing countries in this position, demonstrating his deep understanding of global issues.

"The greatness of a country depends on its role and influence in international affairs."

On September 5, 1984, Malik died of liver cancer at the age of 67. His death prompted widespread tributes, and the Indonesian government awarded him the title of National Hero in recognition of his contribution to Indonesia's independence and development.

The Adam Malik Museum he established has become an important window for future generations to understand the historical status of this great politician. Malik’s story reminds us that historical change often comes from individuals who dare to face challenges and their voices that dare to criticize the system. Does this also enlighten us about the attitudes and behaviors we should have in today's society?
