Asymmetric Distribution of Dopamine Transporters in Premorbid Corticobasal Syndrome—A Case Report
Abstract
Little is known about the early stages of corticobasal degeneration (CBD), which presents itself in a variety of syndromes of which the most common presentation is referred to as corticobasal syndrome (CBS). This is in part because of the difficulty in obtaining correct antemortem diagnosis of CBD. Only 25% to 56% of patients with CBD pathology are correctly diagnosed antemortem. Further, in one autopsy study, only 7 of 13 patients presenting with CBS had CBD at postmortem. One imaging modality used for diagnosis is dopamine transporter (DaT) imaging, which usually demonstrate loss of dopaminergic innervation to the striatum, occasionally with severe lateralization. Here, we present a case with probable CBD who had received a DaT-single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) 9 years before diagnosis, as part of establishing a normal DaT-SPECT reference data set.
