The Transition to a New Electric World

Abstract

This chapter analyzes the electricity consumption evolution over the last 20 years, and various existing projections till 2035. It defines a frame of 4 key factors (population, energy efficiency, fuel switching or electrification of use, and living standards) which significantly influence electricity consumption evolution. A critical review on each of these factors leads the author to conclude that electricity consumption could be more important than most forecasts project today. A concurrent forecast is evaluated based on this analysis.
