Elderly Well-Being

Abstract

The aging of societies is considered a key area of quality and social welfare. Given its implications for the economy, work, social life and politics, aging has generated one of the most controversial debates of today and is becoming an increasingly complex and difficult phenomenon to address. The composite indexes allow us to examine aging from a multidimensional perspective, providing an image of the complexity, diversity and multidimensionality of this reality. In this chapter, we examine six indices that measure the aging of the Europe population from different perspectives: Global AgeWatch Index, Index of Well-being in Older Populations, Active Ageing Index, Aging Vulnerability Index and the Global Aging Preparedness Index, and Aging Society Index. For every index, different sections offer basic information about its conceptual and empirical framework, its process of construction and metrics together with the most recent available data.
