Personalized Nutrition: Customizing Your Diet for Better Health

Abstract

This chapter highlights how we all respond differently to the foods we eat, which is due to differences in our genomes, microbiomes, and the way we metabolize foods. Two people can eat the same food, but the effects on their bodies are very different. We each have specific nutritional requirements depending on our biology, history, and lifestyle. Recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, the microbiome, and metabolomics are covered, as well as how these exciting new forensic tools are being used to tailor our diets to our particular needs. Personalized nutrition will transform our health care system – each of us will get tailored dietary advice to stave off those chronic diseases we are most susceptible to. The use of biometric sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to monitor our health and wellness, and then suggest the optimum foods we should eat, is also discussed.
