Appendicitis: Unusual Complications and Outcomes
Abstract
This chapter explores unusual complications and outcomes in the current era of changing approaches and controversies in the management of both simple and complicated appendicitis. Mortality is low, but morbidity, length of hospitalization, resource utilization, and healthcare-related costs remain high, mostly in association with complicated appendicitis. Unfortunately, up to 40% of children present with complicated appendicitis. Rare complications such as the association of perforated appendicitis with subsequent infertility, inflammatory bowel disease, splenic and portal vein thrombosis, and “stump” appendicitis are included.
