Neuropsychiatric Complications of Infectious Outbreaks
Abstract
Illnesses that reach pandemic proportions have, so far, shown limited CNS involvement resulting in neuropsychiatric manifestations and complications. Neuropsychiatric manifestations can significantly adversely affect the ability of individuals and entire communities to participate in meaningful public health measures or to even provide basic self-care. To complicate matters further, neurological and psychiatric complications can arise from the use of various antimicrobial agents. Finally, neurological and cognitive problems may persist for a considerable time or permanently after surviving a serious infection, as is the case with Ebola post-viral syndrome.
