Finale: Species and Provenance Testing of Conifers
Abstract
This chapter is a summary of the provenance performance of some 20 species of conifers plus 16 species of Mexican pines, the species covered in Chaps. 2, 3, 4, and 5. Breeding programme problems from provenance choice were apparent in some species. Douglas-fir was seriously handicapped by wrong choice of provenance for the early breeding population and so was P. contorta. Most species were superseded by P. radiata in growth rate and wood properties, except Douglas-fir.
