Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Pediatric Obesity

Abstract

Cognitive-behavioral therapy strategies have been found to be effective for managing pediatric obesity and supporting family-based change pertaining to health behavior. This chapter provides information, materials, and a case example that will assist practitioners in implementing these strategies with a cognitive-behavioral focus. Recommendations for assessing quality of life, dietary and physical activity regimens, and anthropometrics at clinic sessions are described. Strategies and examples of clinician-led approaches to intervention are provided, including education components, stimulus control, child behavior management, and utilizing sources of social support. Additionally, the chapter describes adaptations of treatment strategies for specific age groups and commonly encountered challenges in pediatric obesity intervention.
