From Wilkes-Barre to a Physics Ph.D. at Berkeley (1917–1945)
Abstract
In 1941, David Joseph Bohm moved from Caltech, where he had arrived in 1939, to the University of California at Berkeley to advance his doctoral degree under the supervision of Julius Robert Oppenheimer. Earlier, at high school in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and at the Pennsylvania State College, he had already exhibited an outstanding talent for mathematics and science. When he arrived at Berkeley, he had already consolidated two intellectual features which would characterize his whole life. He had a style to do physics and was not concerned only with science as for him science was part of a larger picture involving society at large.
