Natural Disasters: Medical Management

Abstract

Natural catastrophes are disastrous phenomena leaving behind multiple casualties. Among natural disasters with the highest impact on human habitat are the earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos, floods, storms, and wildfires. Disaster medical teams respond to these major incidents applying an all hazard approach while cooperating with all responsible stakeholders. Effective medical care is of paramount importance taking under consideration the short- as well as long-term needs of the affected population. The effectiveness of medical care depends on the continuity of actions and interventions from prehospital area to the in-hospital setting. Although natural disasters cannot be always prevented, a scholastic preparation, systematic approach and prompt medical care can minimize their burden on health.
