Increasing Collaboration and Participation Through Serious Gaming for Improving the Quality of Service in Urban Water Infrastructure

Abstract

The transition towards sustainable developments is represented by the current industry trend. From the society perspective, raising awareness about water related problems is of particular interest. While there is an abundance of information available for the general public, a more interactive approach encourages participation in different aspects of government within a Smart City environment. Mobile crowdsensing has emerged as one of the most prominent paradigms for urban sensing, complementing the smart infrastructure. Serious gaming provides the spark in this interaction between the digital citizen and Artificial Intelligence. We consider the pervasive nature of serious gaming as a challenge that requires fusion between tech and non-tech industries. The proposed serious gaming platform combines crowdsensing with augmented reality for increasing active involvement of citizens in smart government. The core application was designed with a focus on rich user experience and game design elements while the game design is defined in the context of urban water infrastructure management and decision support.
