Analysis of the Friction and Wear Mechanisms of AlTiN Coated Carbide in Combination with Inconel 718 Nickel Alloy
Abstract
The paper presents the results of tribological examination of Inconel 718 nickel alloy in combination with sintered carbide with PVD-AlTiN coating under dry friction conditions. Experimental studies were conducted on a pin-on-disc tribometer, which enables continuous recording of dynamic changes in the normal force FN and friction force values. On this basis, both instantaneous and averaged values of the coefficient of friction μ as a function of the friction path were determined. The studies were conducted for sliding speed vs = 50 ÷ 200 m/min and for FN = 60 and 120 N. The influence of slip velocity and normal force on the changes of μ value and the effects of wear of friction pairs were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDS analysis and confocal and optical microscopy were used to identify wear mechanisms. The analysis of surface wear and tear of samples and counter-samples was made by examining the friction areas and mechanisms of material transfer within the friction pairs. A significant influence of slip velocity on the decrease of friction coefficient value and stabilization of friction conditions in tribological pair was found.
