Approaches and Methods to Iris Recognition for Mobile
Abstract
Over the past decade, the scope of biometric authentication technology was successfully expanded to the field of mobile devices. The application of biometrics to mobile user authentication has the following specificities: authentication should be performed in constantly changing environmental conditions; compact and inexpensive biometric sensors are used for capturing biometric characteristics; and the biometric algorithm should be executed in mobile devices (in case of limited memory and computational resources). These specificities require substantial adaptation of existing biometric algorithms or development of new ones. This chapter is dedicated to approaches and methods used for iris recognition in mobile devices. First, the principles of iris recognition are considered, and a conventional structure of the iris recognition pipeline is given. After that, main challenges are formulated, and basic requirements for mobile iris authentication are described in detail. Second, the proposed iris recognition solution for mobile user recognition is described. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between a user and a mobile device during the authentication, as well as to the iris camera control algorithm which is used during iris image capturing. A brief description of the proposed iris feature extraction and matching algorithm showing robustness to the high variability of the iris representation caused by changes in the environment and physiological features of the iris itself is also given. In conclusion, limitations of iris recognition technology are considered. Methods that can shift these limitations to some extent are presented.
