Subjective Well-Being of Children in the Context of Family Change in Estonia, Poland, and Romania

Abstract

Keeping family change in the context, the aim of this chapter is to explore subjective well-being in relation to assessments about family life of children from Estonia, Poland, and Romania living with both birth parents, with a birth and step-parent or with a single parent. The chapter draws data from the second wave of the International Study of Children’s Well-Being “Children’s Worlds” (ISCWeB) harmonised dataset of 12-year-old children. The chapter concludes that family change and living in changing and diverse household structures uncover risks of decreasing subjective well-being of children. It can be less abrupt if parents develop parenting cultures of doing the family and manage family transitions.
