Abstract


This chapter highlights the Institute for Colored Youth, a school founded to provide a quality education to young African American students. One of the first of its kind, the Institute for Colored Youth taught a variety of disciplines, but its major focus was to prepare African American students to become teachers. This chapter provides insight into the structure and progress of the school, which is now Cheney University.
