Review on Applications of Smart Glass in Green Buildings
Abstract
Smart glass is a better way to control solar heat gain, glare, and sunlight, rather than installing permanently tinted glass or blinds. There are several smart glass (so-called dynamic glass) technologies which include passive (thermochromic) and active (electrochromic) type. The dynamic glass industry has recently gained its popularity in green buildings despite its initial investments. Studies have shown that dynamic glass offers overall savings and save energy by lowering load on heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, thereby reducing greenhouse emissions. Using this technology, hospitals can harvest proper daylight for their patients promoting healing, students can be fueled by the creativity from the great outdoors, teens can be innovative by a more dynamic workspace, and hotel guests can relax and truly connect with their view. Smart glass can also block the heat generated from sunlight, glare, and ultraviolet light improving the visual and thermal comfort of the building occupants.
