Mamdani and Sugeno Fuzzy Inference Systems’ Comparison for Detection of Packet Dropping Attack in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are very vulnerable to attacks due to their complex properties such as dynamic topologies, restricted bandwidth, and battery powers of mobile nodes. One of the very popular attacks in MANETs is packet dropping attack. In this paper, intrusion detection systems are developed for detecting the packet dropping attack using Mamdani-type and Sugeno-type fuzzy inference systems. This paper presents the basic difference between Mamdani-type and Sugeno-type fuzzy inference systems. For this purpose, the Qualnet simulator is used to create the scenario of packet dropping attack and MATLAB toolbox is used to analyze the performance of the developed systems. The simulation results demonstrated the performance comparison of both the developed intrusion detection systems in respect to true positive rate and false positive rate and also discussed the advantages of using Sugeno-type model over Mamdani-type model.
