Developing Surgical Teams: Application
Abstract
The preceding chapter discussed the theoretical underpinnings of human factors (HF) concepts and their role in promoting high reliability organizations (HROs) as well as highly reliable team function. In addition, it demonstrated that current teamwork in the clinical surgical environment is less than ideal, leading to dysfunction and the development of a silo mentality. This chapter will continue the discussion of developing surgical teams by discussing practical applications of HF concepts to develop highly reliable surgical teams and reviewing the development of simulation-based team training in surgery at LSU Health New Orleans Health Sciences Center.
