Community and Practical Spirituality: Perspectives on L’Arche as an Arena for Contemplative Transformation

Abstract

At first glance, L’Arche seems to be an active community with a busy way of life. L’Arche can also be described as ‘impossible’ in that it demands energy and dedication, and can leave one feeling tired and burnt out. So what makes L’Arche a productive arena for contemplative transformation? A careful study of the pedagogy of L’Arche gives insight into that quieter dimension of ongoing contemplative living that makes l’Arche not only ‘possible’ but also ‘desirable.’ Through authentic life sharing experiences with people who have developmental disabilities, and who live on the margins of society, we come to know more about communion and contemplative transformation.
