Production of Liquid Biofuels from Biomass

Abstract

The production of liquid biofuels from biomass is briefly discussed in this chapter, while the main concern in this book is the utilization of liquid biofuels in internal combustion engines. According to the feedstocks, liquid biofuels can be classified into two main categories, i.e., biomass based on triglyceride and biomass based on lignocellulose. The liquid biofuels produced from the biomass based on triglycerides include straight vegetable oil, pyrolytic oil, biodiesel, hydrotreated vegetable oil, and bio-gasoline. In this chapter, the production of bio-gasoline is excluded because the main concern in this book is the liquid biofuels for compression ignition (CI) engine. In addition, liquid biofuels from lignocellulosic feedstocks include bio-oil, bioalcohols, BTL diesel, and drop-in biofuels. For bioalcohols, the production of biomethanol, bioethanol, and biobutanol will be discussed and the production of the other higher alcohols such as pentanol, hexanol, octanol, decanol, dodecanol, and phytol will be followed. Biomass transformation into drop-in biofuels such as DMF, EMF, 2-MF, GVL,EL, MTHF, and THF will be mainly discussed.
