An ultra-light polarization converter based on multilayer copper wire array

Abstract

An ultra-light polarization converter based on multilayer copper wire array is proposed in this paper. This new structure is only made of copper wire, without dielectric substrate. And it has many advantages, such as simple design, low cost, easy processing, and so on. As an example, a sample is designed, fabricated and measured. The total mass of the copper wire is about 8.55\xa0g. For a normally 45°-polarized incident wave irradiating on the multilayer copper wire array, the polarization states of the transmitted waves in simulation results are continuously changing as follows: cross-polarized wave, elliptical polarized wave, circular polarized wave, elliptical polarized wave and co-polarized wave, with the frequency increasing from 8 to 17.85\xa0GHz. More specifically, the cross-polarization and co-polarization waves are emitted at 8 and 17.85\xa0GHz, respectively. The circularly polarized (CP) wave is excited from 10 to 14\xa0GHz. It should be noted that the elliptically polarized waves with arbitrary axial ratios can be obtained from 8 to 17.5\xa0GHz. The experimental and simulation results are in good agreement with each other. This multilayer copper wire array may be used in the field of wireless communication.
