Abstract

Season’s greetings and Happy New Yea r 2019. As I travel down the memory lane to the 2009 NATCON held in the city of joyKolkata, I am remembered, of the events which led to the birth of IJSO. The vision, courage and positive thinking of the then chairman Dr.Sanjay Sharma and Secretary of the association (Dr. Sanjiv Mishra) in the annual general body meeting for starting of the new journal of surgical oncology. As for any new proposal. There were arguments for and against, and a word of caution. Finally, the general body accepted the proposal. That was the beginning of Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology and there I was nominated as the chairman/ Editor to spearhead the dream programme of association, and first issue of the Journal was published. The Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, which started off as a section of Association of Surgeons of India has grown and become an independent, autonomous association of surgical oncologists, and it is hosting the 3rd Indian Cancer Congress in 2021 in Mumbai. Over the years the association has helped to establish specialty certification courses like Mch surgical oncology through universities and through the Medical Council of India and D.N.B. through National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. The journal has become a forum for younger oncologists to show case their talents in various academic activities. The journal caters not only to the surgical oncologists, but also to other oncologists who are involved in cancer care. We have managed to reach various parts of the globe, this can be visualized by the submissions we have received from many other countries in the world. Over the years, we faced hardships initially, but now at the end of the decade we have streamlined the editorial process and publication. The legends in Surgical Oncology across the globe have written guest editorials and published some of their articles. To name a few Prof.Sugar Baker, Prof.Ashok Shaha, Prof.Donald Weaver, Prof.Graham Poston, Prof. David Rew, Prof.Paolo Sammartino,Prof. Olivier Glehen & others.
